We have a 2008 - 12,000KM on it and the back gate is squeaking.

It occurs when cornering or over uneven bumps - leads me to believe its come out of alignment and makes the noise when the chassis is tourqued.

... wanting to find you if anyone else experienced this before I take it to the dealer.

I have a 2008 as well that had such a squeaky tailgate that it was driving me crazy. My car has 13,500 miles on it. I also had a squeaky drivers side seat belt re-tractor. Every time you moved it would squeak.

I took the car to my dealer who confirmed the squeaks and rattles. They replaced the seat belt re-tactor so now everything is ok. The tail gate noise or rattle at every bump was a bad latching unit. Which was also replaced. With these fixes the car is now really quiet like it should be.

Good luck on your fix, I would take it to your dealer and have them look at it. They may have to have a technician ride in the back to determine where the squeak is coming from that is what they did with my car.

Hope everything goes well.

Sorry to threadjack, but those are nice wheels. Mind me asking what wheels they are, size, etc. and what size tires you've got?

It's a well known problem here in Nordic countries, too. The latching unit is to blame. There has been no official fix for this problem yet, but I apply silicone to the unit every now and then, keeping it quiet.

I guess Volvo has to replace the unit, as MGC mentioned.

This shot is of my is my cold weather setup - ROH Wheels (Australian) and Pirelli's sized 235/50/17's (SottoZero) snows.

My summer setup are the OEM 18's.

Cheers

Do you mean 235/55/17's? IIRC, that's the OEM size for 17's. Did you consider getting the 215/65/16's? Technically, those should perform better, but I wonder how much worse would the extra 20 mm's of the wider tire be?

I'm in the same boat as you, getting 18's, and deciding which size if I was to get snows...

Pirelli's sized 235/50/17's fit the existing ROH's I had on my 2002 XC70 (RIP - accident) .

You are right - the narrower the tire the better in the snow but I like the look of bigger tires and had no issue here in Toronto last winter (the winter from hell). It drove to the Laurentians as well in 3 feet of snow - spectacular tires (SottoZeros).

I use the OEM 18's with the Pirelli Scorpions in the Summer. 18" snows are extremely expensive.

Good to hear. Snows are better than all seasons regardless I suppose (which is what the car will come with) so getting 235 snows is still better than all seasons, and 215 snows would be even better than the 235 snows, but probably not by a ton.

They also replaced my tailgate mechanism under warranty, now at 25,000km.
Sure would like the T6 for the mileage they are getting on the 09's

My tailgate was also squeaking. But it was only adjusted on hinges on top and that was ok and has been ok for the last 15000km

/Mats.

I found if you spray the rubber seals on the tail gate with silicon (or other rubber seal care sprays) about every 2-3 months the squeek goes away.

Did the 'ole WD 40 spray - squeak gone.

I guess the colder weather will bring about all sorts of unwanted noises ...

Bring it on! Can't wait to get this car back in the snow. [thumbup]

CCB, I would not use WD40, that could break down the rubber over time, at least use silicon, some say even silicon is not the best, there are some products specifically for rubber, my local crappy tire does not carry them, but I'll post it here when I find the product, I've seen it before, don't remember the name...

I've used lithium grease spray before, I think that's ok for rubber, no? Found it at Home Depot.

I live in Panama, Central America, we have warm humid weather all year roun and I have the same $#*(&# squeak that is driving me nuts.

Though it sucks to say it, but Im glad Im not the only one. The more we have the problem the easier it is to find a fix.

I agree that using WD 40 will harm plastic in the long-run. So maybe VASELINE could be an option.

Thanks for posting this subject, I thought the squeak was something else.

BTW, my 08 XC70 is fit with 20" OZ wheels, I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Take a look at this guy´s solution:

It worked for me.

My 2008 (15,000 miles) started squeaking just last week, so this thread was very timely. I thought I would go crazy, as my 1998 squeak was never permanently fixed. WD-40 in the latch mechanism seems to have done the trick! Thanks for saving me a trip to the dealer, not to mention the aggravation every time I drive!

I purchased XC70 2008 model and it started to rattle after 2,500Km. It was really bugging me! I read the helpful hints and sprayed the locking mechanism on the tail gate with WD40 - It worked!

Had the same issue with my 08 starting from new. Sprayed a bit of silicone lube in tailgate latching mechanism @ 6K, now have 20K no squeaking since.

I bought an '08 XC70 less than a month ago. It had about 15K miles on it. At first I thought something in the spare tire well was loose - it was driving me nuts! Then I read this string of posts. While I would call it a clunking noise and not a squeek, I decided to try a squirt of white silicone spray. A miracle! The clunk was gone!

My sanity is restored! Thanks everyone!

ok all cars have problems. I saw this website (http://www.topspeed.com) the pointed out details and really reviewed the XC70. I think you'll find problems or details that aren't the best in every car you buy. If the only thing is a squeaky tailgate get over it!
