Moan or tone or something audible...what is it?

Cold start--engine has some form of tone (almost like blowing across a milk bottle) when the throttle is open. Not at idle, only when throttle is partially open. Happens at rest, or while car is moving. After less than one mile, tone is gone. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. (132k miles)

I'm assuming this is a 1998?
Secondary air pump is failing and you WILL get a check engine light soon. Very expensive to replace and needed for emmisions.
There are cheaper ways though, go to www.matthewsvolvosite.com and look in the repair database

98. Thanks for input. I have read threads. Is there any harm in running the engine without the air pump?

I don't think so, however check on www.matthewsvolvosite.com as those guy so these all the time
you WILL need it working at some point ( for emmision testing as it will eventually fail and seize up) a check engine light will come on soon

I have had similar condition with my volvo for approx. 30k mi. and have had no problems other that just letting the car warm up before driving or exceeding 1,400 rpms. Warming it up to that point usually just takes about 2 min.

Thanks for input on 30K miles and functionality. No emissions requirement so no worries on that.
