Is my dealership unique (Putnam Volvo in Burlingame, CA) in that they do NOT offer loaner cars for when you take your car in, such as for service that'll take half a day?

I love my volvo, but this is a deterrent for staying with the brand. And it's such a contrast with having to deal with a Lexus dealership which do provide the customers with loaner cars.

I think that's more of a dealership issue than a brand issue. My dealer has free loaners for anyone who bought from them. Otherwise loaners are via an enterprise desk in the dealership. My service advisor always reserves a volvo loaner for me, usually s40, s70 or s60.

Humm... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif Mine does offer either loaner or shuttle service in 50 km radius, and he's a small dealership in a small town. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

My dealer gives me a choice, either way I end up with a loaner, and always the same letter, swap my V70 for a V40 but have requested a S60 next time, just to see what it is like.

The choice I have is either, they pick up from the house and leave the loaner or I can go to the garage and drop off/collect. They will always ring me and let me know, well in advance if I should make my way to collect or leave it until tomorrow as they need to get some parts in. One time they had the car for three days, nice to know they don't rush the job but look after #1.

Either way I think I have a win/win situation. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Now THAT is service.

Well, I called around other dealerships and my dealership is one of the few that don't provide that service. Sounds like I'll be switching dealerships when the lease is up.

Like you Clodel, I came from Lexus dealerships where I always received a loaner unless I was in for a simple oil change. My dealer does have loaners, but very few, so you have to make an appointment way in advance and you must have bought your car from that dealership.

My dealership provides me a loaner each time I visit -- normally requires me to make an advance appointment. They've loaned me S40, S60, XC70 and S80. I always try to get the wagon as they're so useful. I take my car in on a Friday and return the loaner on Monday. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Both Volvo dealers here in Alberta offer loaners providing arrangements are made prior to scheduled service appointments. The dealer in Calgary insists that a surcharge of $20.00 CAD helps to alleviate its soaring insurance costs. Relieved to know that the Edmonton dealer still believes in gratis loaners. Drove a nice little ruby red S60 today and got a groovy Volvo flashlight to boot! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Smythe Volvo in San Jose has a fleet of loaner cars. To guarantee geting one though, you do have to ask ahead of time. While getting some stuff installed, I got to drive a couple of year old S80. Pretty nifty as far as I was concerned. Made me think of how nice an S80 was as a car since I'd never even been in one before.

I have always gotten one when I needed one (which was twice, once due to a minor malfunction and once while my car was at a bodyshop) and didn't mind if it wasn't a Volvo.
