WalMart of all places now sells a 'Dexron VI' ATF which claims compatibility with Dexron II/III, Toyota T-IV, and other ATF specs. [It does not include the 3309 spec on the label.] I am still skeptical of ATFs that claim 'universal' compatibility with standard and Highly Friction Modified trannies. I am using Toyota T-IV [3309] now since I can buy individual quarts from the dealer [$6.** after tax] for less than a 12 Qt case of Mobil 3309 delivered.

Does anyone have any info on the Dexron VI product? It is $3 per Qt or so which makes it attractive. Would be nice if it works in the Volvo HFM Aisins.

Do you really want to be the guinea pig?
Buy 3309 or Toyota Type 4 which is about 4 bucks.
Do you want to take a chance for 12-16 dollars?

I do believe that Dextron IV would be ideal in older Volvo transmissions, but our Asin Warner trannies require a special fluid - Mobil 3309. You can also purchase the more expensive Volvo branded version or Toyota T-IV - both are actually rebranded Mobil 3309 fluids (as confirmed by BobIsTheOilGuy.com) and here on our forums. Volvo sells their fluid anywhere from $15-20 per 1L bottle, and as JRL has mentioned, $4-5 for the Toyota T-IV. Mobil 3309 actually sells for around $6-7 a litre. When doing a transmission flush, you may need anywhere from 12-18 litres of fluid - hence the attraction to use Toyota fluids. :)

I am less concerned with a few $$ than curious about the advances in ATF.

Instead of 12 Qt flushes I now just drain the pan and refill with 2.5 - 3 Qt with every 5K oil change. That is plenty to keep the ATF quality up to snuff.

Toyota dealer is my friend for T-IV now.
