Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com (http://www.truedelta.com). TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly.

We've had a strong response from Volvo owners. So about 300 S60, V70, and XC70 owners have already signed up. But more are needed to provide solid results on all model years.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results for free.

For the details, and to sign up to help out:

Mike, I usually do most of the basic maintenance and repairs myself. How does your system handle service/repair info that's done by owners?

Maintenance doesn't get reported on the main survey, no matter who does it, to minimize the time requirement.

DIY repairs can be reported just like any others. One question on the survey asks who performed the repair, with "self" one of the choices. The only difference: with DIY repairs report hours rather than days.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Updated results recently posted for the 2001 and 2004. The 2004 has about an average repair rate, while the 2001 doesn't do so well.

The next update, in November, should include additional model years--but some could still fall just short of the minimum sample size unless a few more owners sign up and participate.

The results:

Next set of results in November, with a preview for participants in October.

Would like to provide results on more model years, but need more participants to help make this happen.

Just added a 2002 to your list. Hopefully it does a little better than the 2001...

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Not enough 2002s signed up yet to find out. Hopefully soon.

I suspect they will be better, second model year and all that.

This month's survey is the last before the February results. Sample sizes remain marginal for a number of model years, so additional participants would be very helpful.

Last night I was reading the 2009 Consumer Reports book my wife brought home. I looked at the XC70 results and it shows that up to 2004 the model had mostly below average ratings but from 2004 on it had average or above average across the board.

TrueDelta has released updated Car Reliability Survey results for the XC70. Most model years, including the three we have full results for, appear to be about average in reliability. The sample sizes for the 1998 ("better than average") and 2006 ("worse than average") are marginal, so these results are broad indicators at best. With more participants we could provide full results for all model years.

TrueDelta now has a separate results page for each model. The one of the Volvo XC70:

Not surprisingly, actually. It's possible that reliability has remained the same, but that failure rates jump at a certain age/odometer reading.

I'm going to sticky this - EVERYONE, if you already haven't, I'd like to ask each and every one of you to register your XC70 and do the monthly reports. It helps us out in the long run, with new perspective owners, and if we have chronic issues, if they are documented it will make it easier to get the manufacturer to fix the issues.

It will take 2 minutes every month - which I'm sure we can all help out considering the amount of time we spend here on a monthly basis. :D

We've updated the results for the XC70 to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2006: 106, worse than average, marginal sample size

2005: 119, worse than average

2004: 107, about average

2002: 88, about average, small sample size, probably not accurate judging from other results

2001: 170, worse than average

A big thanks to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

The site says it needs 25 cars of each model to begin. Is this per area as I am in Ireland and there may not be 25 XC70's in Ireland!!!!

mkaresh

No, it's not per area. We have no reason to believe an Irish XC70 will be any more or less reliable than an XC70 elsewhere.

We've updated the results for the V70 and XC70 to include owner experiences through June 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007: 57, about average, very small sample size

2006: 63, about average

2005: 112, worse than average

2004: 124, worse than average

2002: 141 worse than average

2001: 187, worse than average

A big thank you, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. Because of increased participation, these results are more precise than previous results. We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We've updated the results for the V70 and XC70 to include owner experiences through September 30, 2009. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2008: 44, about average (S80, V70, and XC70 for this year)

2007: 53, about average, small sample size

2006: 79, about average

2005: 106, about average

2004: 121, about average

2002: 205 worse than average

2001: 211, worse than average

We've also introduced two new statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop. We don't have these for the S60, V70, and XC70 yet, though, because they require a larger number of responses.

Everyone who has been helping, thanks, I certainly appreciate it. We'll have further updates in February and May. With more participants, we could provide all three stats for all model years. So if you haven't already signed up to participate, please consider doing so.

There is one thing that bothers me--a lot!!!. about surveys...CU does them when a new car was pruchased and it seems that if an owner does not have problems, he does not respond...

It would be only those poor souls who are having problems that would be searching the web for answers and that skews the results...

Jerry

Jerry

It seems this way...based on what?

If this were true, then the reported problem rates for all cars would be high. And they're not. For some cars in the survey, hardly any owners have reported a repair. It probably makes a big difference the way this particular survey is structured--it's quite different from others.

So, no need to be so bothered :)

mkaresh

Starting this month we have a new question to measure, as objectively as possible, the severity of a problem. Many people have been asking for reliability stats that weight problems by how severe they are, and once we have enough responses with the revised survey we'll start providing this.

Also, updated reliability stats this month.

As always, the more owners participate, the better the information we can provide to everyone.

Seeing stats of several car models (and several makes) next to each other is very informative. TrueDelta gave me the info I needed to ditch the Volvo and buy a Toyota. I will tell you that it hurt to leave the XC behind... but it was well worth it, I have to say.

As seen in the stats, newer XC70s tend to require repairs less often.

The 2002 model definitely deserves a poor rating. When we compared out 1992 245 to our 2002 V70XC in regards of maintenance expenses, the XC literally has cost our family four times as much to maintain. This comparison included service receipts dating back to December 1991 for the 240, and July 2002 for the XC. Really says something about the deteriorating state of Volvo's reliability since the late 1990s.

We've updated our car reliability stats for the V70 and XC70 to include owner experiences through December 31, 2012.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007: 62, moderate

2006: 49, low

2006 R: 14, low, small sample size

2005: 94, high

2004: 83, moderate

2004 R: 65, moderate, small sample size

2003: 78, moderate

2002: 110, high

2001: 116, high

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

These stats, for those years where we have enough data:

2007: 47, < 1

2006: 61, < 1

2005: 44, 13

2004: 42, 4

2002: 25, 8

2001: 37, 5

Thank you, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May and August. With more owners involved, we could provide all three stats for all model years.

This strikes me as daft… how can you compare apples and pears and then come up with anything useful? The mechanicals of a 240 and XC70 simply are not remotely similar enough to make a comparison useful. My 240 auto estate was mom proof and felt as if it was made to last forever. I don't think any Volvo has been built like it since!
