View Full Version : Mileage Difference T6 vs 3.2?

What do you think the fuel mileage difference will be between the T6 engine vs the present 3.2 engine in the 08 XC70?

How much of an up-charge will there be for the T6 engine?

I've driven the 3.2 in an 08 XC70 and find it adequate for most driving situations but it really lacks IMO the fun aspect that I'm looking for in a car. The sluggish acceleration on the on ramps would probably bother me in the long term.

Overall it is a nice car I just wish it had a little more snap.

MGC,
Volvo of course haven't yet released technical details of the T6 XC70, so all we can go on as a quide is to look at the relative fuel economy of other Volvo models that have both the 3.2 and T6 engines. The only Volvo model that has both the 3.2 and T6 engines avialable also with AWD, is the S80 from the Volvo international site.

From this site, fuel economy of S80 3.2 AWD is 10.9 l/100km - or 21.6 Miles/USGall. Acceleration time 0-100km/h (0-62mph) is 8.2 seconds.

For the S80 T6 AWD, fuel economy is 11.2 l/100km - or 21.0 miles/USgal. 0-100 km/h (0-62mph) is 6.9 seconds.

Make what you want from these numbers, but my opinion is there will be only a relativley small penalty to be paid in fuel usage for a much better performing engine.

I took delivery yesterday of a V70 AWD T6 & have done 2 short fuel economy tests of 100kms each, both on the same run 50/50 hwy/city. 1. smooth easy driving returns about 10.5ltrs/100kms. 2. absolute flogging up to 190kms/hr 15.4ltrs/100kms.

Thanks for that feedback gregorc73 - thats encouraging. While I'm hanging on to the hope that we will see the XC70 T6 in Australia (which it looks like we wont), one of my fallback options is the V70 AWD T6.

Wish I didn't need the AWD and extra ground clearance. I like the new V70. Have any pics for us ?

Now with 1285kms on the clock average consumption seems to have leveled out at 11.1ltrs/100kms. this is with normal everday city driving in Sydney. The more i drive this car the more i like it. Very smooth & comfortable with lots of power & great grip. Too a degree it doesn't feel that much different to my 2003 xc70 2.5ltr (except for the extra power). i have driven the 2008 xc D5 & definately prefer the V70T6. i have not driven the V70 in the snow yet but should do shortly, so we will see how it goes. i will post some photos when the rain stops & i can photograph it clean.

Thats encouraging news gregorc73. The long term average in my MY06 XC70 is 11.3 l/100km. So if you're getting 11.1 this early in the engine's life, things can only get better. While I realise there will still a difference in fuel consumption between a similar engined XC70 and AWD V70, its still food for thought. I'm still not sure what way I'll go if Oz doesn't get the T6 XC70 - I like the greater ground clearance the XC70 has over the V70 and I'm not that impressed with the information released to date on the XC60.

2. absolute flogging up to 190kms/hr 15.4ltrs/100kms.

Don't you love those unrestricted roads we have in and around Sydney. [thumbup]

I was wildly impressed by the V70T6 when I drove it. Nice as the new XC70 is, I'd want to be in a V70 any day. Unfortunately I need the ground clearance of an XC. If only I could find a way to justify owning both???

Look after your T6 and don't get caught.

I am in the same boat. Loving my new XC70 but wouldn't it be good just to be able to raise the suspension of a V70 a extra 100mm or so when you needed it ?

Oh well, I will just have to be happy with the 8.5l/100kms economy the D5 is returning...

Here are some photos of the V70. I had a good drive home today in the wet & was really impressed with the AWD grip, with the steering weight set on high & suspesion set on advanced it is deceptively surefooted. The ability to adjust the steering weighting & suspsension settings gives a great combination to suit almost any road conditions. two of the best things on this car are the active bixenons that follow the road during cornering, this has to be experienced to be believed. The electric tailgate seems like a gymick until you have your hands full, press the button & stand back.

If only people driving big horrible clunky 4WD's around would realise how much better they could spend their money we would have the pleasure of seeing more nice looking cars like yours out and about... And I love those wheels too...

A doctor friend of mine has been trying to book a test drive of a T6 for months now. They refuse to have one available. He's keen on upgrading from his Subaru Liberty 3.0R to something with a bit more substance.

But the way things are going, he simply won't ever get the chance to buy one and will probably be buying a BMW instead.

Tell your friend to contact Jeanette Rogan at Trivet Volvo Alexandria on 8338 2111. She organised 2 test drives for me at times convenient to me & even offered to drive to my office with a car. Tell your friend to mention my name if he wants (Greg Crisp) as a referal. She was really great to deal with. i know they have 2 or 3 cars available for test drives at any one time.

Ok, fuel consumption seems to have levelled out at 11.5 to 12ltrs / 100kms. i can get better than this quite easily but to really appreciate the T6 i think 12ltrs / 100kms is more realistic. This engine is so much more instantly responsive than the 2.5T in the XC70 i had, & i really loved that car. This engine is strong & pulls like a train at any speed up to 190kmh (i haven't been over this speed yet but it was still pulling strongly when i backed off). This engine should be in the current XC.

He drove it this week and was very pleased with Trivett and says it is one of the best cars he has driven. That's coming from someone with a lot of track experience and a member of various car/driving clubs.

I'm pressuring him to buy. :)
