XC owners, what is your experience with driving at hwy speeds with crosswinds? In all of the suv craze I hear very little discussion about the problem of crosswinds. People I know that have driven rental suv's for first time comment about how badly they got blown all over the road by crosswinds. I have never driven a newer suv in high winds and wonder if the higher height of the XC causes a discernable difference. Even my 944 (with IPD swaybars) can get blown around some in high winds.

Welcome to the forum, DAC! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif In my experience it's very stable - no apparent difference from a regular car. Not something to worry about...

That is good news to read. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Do you think the addition of a Thule storage box on the roof would make any difference to your opinion?

Nah - but it might depend on the height of the box. Most Thule & Yakima cargo bins have a low profile so it shouldn't make any difference.

I was driving along in a terrible cross-wind about a week ago and the wind noise was unbelievable (blowing into the drivers side of the car). But the car tracked in a straight line with no steering adjustments necessary. I was actually very impressed. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I'm sure you'll find the XC a rock steady vehicle to drive, even in cross winds. I've driven mine in blustery conditions while hauling twin seakayaks and haven't experienced any problems at all.   http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

with addition of our thule box, the car does get buffeted a bit more in cross winds.  nothing to get your undies in a knot over though....

The addition of the cargo box, in my case a thule mountaineer, imo substantially increases buffetting in heavy crosswinds.  It has never been so bad as to cause the rear end to drift or the car to break loose.  Of course, it's not like a have taken the box off on a trip to compare in the same winds. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif  That said, I have noticed crosswind problems in the xc to be much less than in my old cherokee.
Dimensions of the Thule Mountaineer:
