--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 2000 v70 xc and I am having brake light problems.
1) Brake lights remain on at times while driving, or while the car is in the off postion.
2) Tapping the brake pedals seems to release the lights.
3) I see serveral post concerning this is, but I am not sure which one is the best option.
4) common sincewould tell me it is switch or sensor related to the brake pedal.

Any help would be appreciated. I kept an Audi 4000 running great for years, (300K plus), just gave my daughter my Volvo 850, (great for her, maybe not for me).

I think you are referring to the actual brake lights, not the warning light on the dash which is what beiner is referring to.

The problem is either in the switch or the harness in the tailgate. If it is in the harness then look at the link below which describes in detail the issue and how to resolve it....

I agree with the switch, but how can the harness play a role in the
brake lights coming on at random? Power has to pass through the
switch before anything can happen back there...

From the OP's entry, it sounds to me like it's pretty much gotta be the brake pedal switch.
