View Full Version : Anyone have roof ribs?

I am thinking of getting roof ribs for my roof so I can use some of the luggage bags that do not require crossbars.

Does anyone have them on their car? I have searched for pictures, but the only one I have found is the picture that Volvo has in their catalog.

Thanks

Hi,

Am also considering to buy these roof ribs. Don't know what Volvo is asking for these ribs in Germany but in NL they literally "rib" you off. Volvo dealers ask a steep price, (that I won't share here) for 7 of these thin rubber ribs with two sided tape. In USA, these same ribs cost $ 110,- excl. shipping to Europe or for me to Asia, see http://volvopartspeople.com.
Ordered some lockable wheel nuts with them as a test but considering to order the silver/alu wingprofile crossbars and as stated roof ribs soon.

Curious to hear the practical experiences with the ribs of other forum-members but the look alone is cool. [thumbup]

One of our XC club member has them, she installed it for looks. [thumbup]

The only rant she has about these is that it makes waxing the roof harder, you have to get the wax residue from around the ribs individually.

Not the best pic, but this is the only one I can find of her XC with the ribs.

Huh, on top of everything else the XC70 can also swim.[cool2]

Nice picture but the XC70 is NOT meant for that type of river abuse. Just looking on how the water has made it 50% up the front grill. Feel sorry for the kid in the backseat with fears of getting swept away by the current.

We see pics of XC70 with water washing over the bonnets. But how far can they REALLY go? And what is sensible?

You're supposed to check the depth before crossing. But my parents were crossing crocodile infested waters with their '99 V70XC in the North of Queensland. Interesting dilemma. You don't want to check on foot, but you also REALLY do not want to get stuck in the middle.

Is this thread about whether the car has roof ribs or water wings? :p

But I'm curious. If you look at the front and the back of the cars in both pictures... could it be that the cars are pushing a bow-wave which makes it look a lot deeper than it is? Or maybe there's a deep spot - like a trench in the river bed - just there?

I'd also be interested to know if there were any issues with the cars after this crossing? I see the wading depth of the new XC70 is 300mm - what is it for the older model?

For reference, XC90 crossing same river, your speed determines how much water gets on your hood.
