Hi All,

I've recently bought a set of 2007 rti dvd's to upgrade my 2003 system. The product number is 31260747, which is the correct upgrade according to two different dealerships I spoke with. My original dvd is product number 30657541.

But the disc doesn't load :( (I get dvd cannot be read message, contact dealership). So I checked this with the local Volvo parts department and they tell me I need the car into the workshop to fix the software in the dvd player. When I asked what they need to do I'm told "The software comes from Sweden (surprise!) and is matched to the car."
"Is it a firmware upgrade?", I ask. "No, it fixes the dvd player" he says.

I can't get to the dealership (30 min drive) during the week and Saturday morning the kids need a lift to swimming. Can anyone help?

The softwar version in help-about is: 638 and hardwae version is: 0030679455A.

Thanks in advance,,
Steve

Apologies Stevefor the dig in the title, I have a rather jaundiced view of dealers, some are good, some are (unprintable...). Even so VNS is something that very few Volvo people understand (usually it works and gives no problems - functionally that is).

Something in the back of my mind - and I've been through several XC70 models in the last few years - is that there was an upgrade CD bundled with upgrades in 2005. I have to hand a CD (yes a CD) that had to be applied before upgrading to the 2005W27 release (its part number is 30775208).

Now stick with me -

Very, very few Volvo owners (for recent models anyway) are "enthusiasts", so I guess VCUK didn't bother to include the upgrade in many (if any) further DVD packages. After all VCUK is there to sell you a NEW car,if you drop out of the loop, well then you're "beyond the pail"...

I'm being a bit unreasonable here EVERY marketing organisation is there to sell you new kit, it is unprofitable for the main organisation to maintain older models m- that's the dealers' job (in your dreams).

Having been thoroughly cynical - I hate everybody today - try the following:-
(1) get onto your dealer ?somewhere in Surrey? and talk to their master technician and describe the problem with my info above. If no joy, ring Volvo at Marlow - not the 0800 number, they know nothing, or the 0845 number, they know even less, but the 01628 (not supposed to give the full number here for some reason) - do a Google, and speak very nicely to the lovely receptionist who will - if you're very lucky get a real specialist to contact you.

It may well be that I am talking absolute cahones, but I believe I may be right. There are some great guys in Volvo UK, but they are insulated from the general public, and your problem is a bit off the beaten track.

I'm hoping that my suggestion will prompt the MT at your local dealer to look up the technical bulletin.

I'd send you the CD, but if I'm wrong it might cause you more problems.

BTW I don't work for Volvo, I love the cars, and have great respect for the back office people, treat them all kindly and you'll get excellent service.

Happy hacking!

All three of the RTI DVD's have the upgrade software on them. DVD2 is for the UK, all you do is stick the DVD in and it auto updates, so no need to take your motor anywhere. I upgraded my 2003 maps with 2007 and thats all I did, and after the upgrade the Traffic info magically worked! :)

Thanks for the replies TrueBlue and Bigstoo. I had my car booked in before reading your messages and though I can't be sure he was a mster, I did speak to a technician at my dealership about my problem. He spent 2 hours trying to get my discs to work without success. He did run a upgrade disc which has fixed similar problems before, probably the CD you mention, but to no avail. They've now passed my problem to Volvo HQ in Sweden as they have exhausted all known options. To be fair to the dealership I was expecting to hear 'you'll need to buy a new one' but they didn't even charge for the 2 fruitless hours in the workshop.

So my original dvd still works which I'm grateful for, I'll update the forum with any news...

Cheers,
Steve

your other option then is to download it and burn it to a Verbatim DVD+R DL, if the original doesnt work, maybe this will?? :)

AscotSteve,

Are you RedSteve that posted a similar post on Volvo-forums? If so, it seems that we're having almost idenitcal issues.

Having sorted out my dirty lens so that my original 2003 disc works again, I have bought the latest disc off e-bay (same part no. as you - 31260747). I'm getting the same cannot read message that you are when I try the new disc.

I spoke to the Volvo dealership in Leatherhead to check whether the disc is compatible with my car (V70 MY2003). They said that it is not! Apparently there are two versions of the 0748 upgrade discs - one to be used with factory-fitted DVD units and the other to be used with after-market fitted units. Apparently, part no. 31260747 is the one that is supposed to used with after-market fitted units.

If this is true, it begs the question why the two different dealerships you have spoken with haven't idenitifed this obvious issue?

I'd be interested if you keep us updated with how Volvo get on with your problem.

Hi Pilgrim Tim,

Yes, Redsteve and I are and the same. Our stories do sound identical: Dirty lens fixed original read problem followed by failed downloaded copy, followed by failed eBay originals (as per dealer recommended part number). I spoke to HR Owen in London and Pirbright Squire Furneaux and they both gave me the same part number based on the number of my original DVD.

My Sat nav is factory fitted so based on what you've told me it certainly follows that it won't work. I'll make another call to the dealership and post and findings...

Cheers,
Steve

I've just spoken to parts at pirbright and leatherhead volvo dealerships and neither could tell me whether my part number is for a factory or after-market unit. I do know mine is a factory fitted unit but the parts dept couldn't tell me which unit my discs are for! All they can do is take the original discs part number and get the replacement part number.

Incidentally there's now a 2008 set of discs available - I wonder how many more versions before I get an upgrade to work...

The RTI updates come out twice a year. Thats what the version number denotes, so the version 0724 (for example) is year=07, week=24. The other update happens approx 26 weeks after that, so 0750 etc and so on. its not exactly 26 weeks apart so there may be a few weeks either side when they actually come out, but its a good rule of thumb.

update from mrbatch

i went to volvo and ran a CD not DVD update ( says software update on it part vcc 31266835). My software was updated and now says 0031260794AB with s/w 1404. Tried burnt disks for 2006 and 2008 - no joy.
Borrowed 2005 real disk part 30752548 0525 and this worked. So the unit after cd software update will read disks just it appears not copied disks.
Looked on volvo website - they say need 31215670 for xc90 pre 2007 model. rang volvo and they said i need bit 31285374!! could be the difference between factory installed and after market units???
anyway - trying to borrow a real 2008 disk & check it runs on my system (either of above) then burn it and see if it works.
If not appear xc90 2003 units not see copied disks

Well, my 03 XC90 reads copied disks, but if i start the car in the morning it reads it fine, but if i stop the car and starts it again it wont read, but after some hours off it reads it again, but it always reads the original, its a mystery. My friends 03 XC90 dosent read copied disks at all but only the original

Update for AscotSteve (and others that are interested).

Through the Volvo Owner’s Club forum, I got in touch with Simon at FRF Volvo, Swansea. He told me that the advice I had received from the Volvo dealership in Leatherhead (i.e., there are two versions of the 0748 upgrade discs - one to be used with factory-fitted DVD units and the other to be used with after-market fitted units) is nonsense. All V70s between 2002 and 2007 had the same type of system using the same disks.

Volvo have now dropped the price for the latest version (0820) of the update disc to £179.99 but Simon will provide it for around £153. Because of the price drop, I finally bit the bullet and bought the genuine disc off Simon and guess what, it worked. I guess the “genuine” disc I bought off eBay wasn’t so genuine.

Cheers for the info. If the latest is 0820, then there should be a new version due out shortly as they come out every 26 weeks or so, so should be titled 0846 or similar, which equates to around mid-November?
