I hate to bring up the dreadfull HID thread, but Im intrigued as to how to install factory fitted HID's onto my 2004 XC, the HID's Im inquiring about is not a plug and play set, rather a set that came factory installed in a older XC. The set up includes a plastic piece w ballast that seems to fit over the current headlight set-up an attaches by screws, bulbs with the igniters, and factory wiring that links this together. My question to you all is if you know how and if this would work for my non-HID vehicle. Please advise.

Do you mean all the components from a set of factory Xenon headlight without the actual Housing itself?

If so, the 2 problems you have to overcome are:

1. The Xenon D2R bulb base being different from your non-Xenon H7 bulb socket in the housing; you can custom fab an adaptor plate from used/burnt out H7 bulb and epoxy it onto the D2R bulb.

2. You'll have to drill a hole in the shunt of the CEM to overcome the "Headlight bulb failure" messge in the DIM. Do a search and you'll find it in the forum.

Hope this helps, good Luck! [thumbup]

Or you can install aftermarket plug and play HIDs. I've installed 8000k on my XC70, it looks sick. Sorry I couldn't find my thread on installing my HID in the forum.

Thanks for the help. I found this set on ebay, and it does come with the housing. I guess I need to somehow fabricate the bulb fitment, or I can pick up an aftermarket bulb with the correct base and pair it with this. Do you think this would work?

I'm not sure what model year or model your potential HID's are from, but in my experience if they are from a non-European XC70/V70 I wouldn't bother. I have HID's in both my '05 XC70 and my '06 V50. My V50 has the best headlights I have ever seen -- they are simply awesome. Those in the XC70 are a dissapointment. I wish I hadn't paid the premium and believe the standard system may be better.

If you can get HID's mounted in PROJECTOR lenses housing, they'd be worth it. I agree with Jack too - my MY04 HID's are not projectors, but just in a regular halogen housing. HID's need to be projected to get the best beam... which is why his V50 has amazing lighting, they're projector lenses... am I correct Jack?

Exactly right Forkster. I have the impression, right or wrong, that they rushed the XC70 HIDs into production to compete with all the high end cars that had them. It looks like they just put an HID bulb in a halogen reflector and added leveling. Makes me think about their speed and finesse with early iPod and Sirius integration too.

Brings up another consideration. Factory HIDs have automatic leveling. I don't know how important it is....probably more so to oncoming drivers [cussing]...but I can't imagine adding it with aftermarket bits.

someone needs to come out with an aftermarket headlight with built in projectors and HIDs. To buy OEM is too expensive. Ive tried a number of junkyards, but nothing. The 04' headlights are terrible. Im thinking of just leaving the headlights and putting the HID's into the fogs, atleast that will show whats on the ground more. What do you guys think, and how easy is this?

Hi all. first post...

On my 7th Volvo, Always loved them (except the 240)... anyway. I thought I was crazy regarding my headlamps. They're absolutely terrible. Are HIDs the answer???
