Does anyone know of a good place that has good deals on oil filters for our XC70's? Also what kind of oil do you guys use, full synthetic or a blend?

Check out:

I only use full synthetic and recommend anyone with a turbo to do likewise.

^^How often do you change your synthetic oil?

Edit: Also i have never done an oil change on a car like this before... all i have to do is buy the oil filter cartridge, pull it out and replace it when i change the oil?

For a decent explanation of a late model Volvo oil change check out:

Its an S80 but the oil change is basically the same.

+2 on FCP Groton source. I get mine by the 12-pack. Don't forget to order the aluminum crush washers.

I love synthetic, but its not required. Ours lived on Castrol GTX for the first 60k miles, changed at 3750 mile intervals. Engine is very clean and gets great UOA reports. At around 60K I switched to Castrol Syntec 0W-30 Euro (German Castrol) with changes at 5000 to 7500 miles. So far so good.

The O ring on the filter housing. Check the angle gear oil level and condition while you're down there.

You may get lucky, but I found it was impossible to remove the oil filter housing without the special bowl-shaped wrench. You want the cast aluminum one. They are widely available on the internet for about $20.00. I used a Purolater brand filter from Auto-Zone. It costs a dollar or two more than a mail order o.e.m. filter but it appears well-made and it is available on the spot.

You are right on that one. I made the mistake of draining the oil (the first time) only to find I cannot remove the oil filter. I tried the bowl type from Canadian Tire (Autozone), but none of them fit, so I went and got a tool that looks like beaker tongs (if you remember grade 7 chemistry class) but made a lot more strong and with sharp teeth to grab onto the filter housing. I use those now, and I like them, but I strongly recommend you practice caution, because the housing is made of plastic, so if you squeeze too hard, you crack it, and if you don't squeeze hard enough, the sharp teeth will make a mess of it.[thumbup]

Did my first oil change today... Seems that the dealership that did my last oil change (Don Beyer) got a little excited when tightening the oil filter housing the IDP oil filter wrench could not get it off. I first used just a regular socket wrench with the IDP attachment, no luck, then moved up to a 8 inch breaker bar, but the IDP socket just jumped to the next slots when major force was applied... I ended up using a very large pair of adjustable pliers, and managed to remove with a few minor scratches on the housing. Everything else went very well except that i manged to lose the 5 other aluminum crush washer i bought with the filters. Does anyone know where i can get more of these without having to pay IDP to ship them??

Thanks for all the help guys!
