I've been hoping to buy into the volvo family for a few years. Our family has recently grown and now is the time (both for room and safety). I have the chance to buy a used 2001 XC (6k mi). I've read that the 2001 were the first to move to the new platform; as such, are there noted problems with the new design and if so, were they corrected in 2002? I'm looking at about a 25% discount for the used vs. the MRSP for the 2002.

Can anyone confirm that the OEM warranty is transferable?

Thanks in advance for the insights.

newbie,

Yes, the new Volvo 4 year - 50,000 mile warranty is transferable? What you would need to find out is the original date of service for this 2001 Cross Country. The warranty would begin from the original date of sale. So if it was sold in January of 2001 then the warranty would expire in January of 2005 or at 50,000 miles whichever came first.

If you have any other questions let me know.

The 2001 had some problems with burnt out lights, but had resolved many of the issues plaguing the earlier models.  The advantage of the 2002 is that it comes with more advanced engine management system ME7.1 (I think).  You should be able to purchase a 2002 XC at little above dealer invoice.  Bargain hard.
