strange noise

2001xc 70 with120k miles. When you step on the gas you hear a sound like tires/road noise on the freeway when you roll down the window. The sound stops as soon as you go off the gas. No clunking or grinding or shuttering just a loud sound from the rear of the car. Any ideas?

Off the gas or off the brakes?

Off the gas. Can't tell if it is from the rear or the middle.

Lately I have been hearing the same kind of noise, but not very loud and not yet reproducible. At first I thought it was the tires but that seems unlikely since they are two years old and the noise was not there until recently. I am fearful of some kind of wear related noise from the drive train or axles. I will be interested to see how this thread goes.

bad news. Rear differential gone bad. 3800 for rebuilt (installed) or 2700 for used with lifetime warranty.

Gees,
I had to put one in a 99, cost me $800 in used parts, (diff AND a VC in a package)
Labor was about a grand for all

I got two quotes and they were close to the same amount. This is the first thing I have had to replace in 120k.
