View Full Version : Interchangable Headlight Assy. between 04 and 06 model XC70

My question is, can the "cutglass" headlight unit from a 04 XC70 be replaced with the "clear lens" headlight unit from a 06 XC70?

Are these units replaceable across the board with V70s? Or any other model Volvos?

I don't like the "cut glass" look of the older models and would like to go to clear lenses, and HID as well if possible.

Can this be done without cutting or bending anything but wires?:o

You 'should' be able to simply remove the lense housing and headlight wiring harness for your 04, and put in an 06 wiring harness and HID equipped housing with HID ballast. The HID uses less voltage so there should be no issues. It may require a VIDA reprogram but I'm not 100% sure.

Disconnect the battery first before you do the work too.

Why do you want a HID lense? Most members here find that the Halogens actually give better light. If you stick in a GE NightHawk bulb - it will be even better. :)

You can exchange the whole headlight housing unit with the new ones.
But, it's not possible to exchange just the lenses; since MY01~MY04 use Glass lenses and MY05+ uses Plastic lenses.

Here's my MY02 with MY07 HID projector headlight:

and my MY02 with MY05 halogen headlight:

Thanks guys,
Well the HID projector headlights look much better IMHO and I have heard that they produce less light, also there is some talk about adjusting them a little higher (not enough to blind oncoming traffic) for better lighting.

Thanks for the pictures, am I to understand that the ballast is inside the housing? What do you have to do electrical wise for the conversion? Do you need to reprogram in order to not get burned light messages?

Thanks again for the info,

Mitch

Hey ifnt, your car looks awesome!! So did you purchase the HID housings/units from the dealer? Do you recall how much $$, if I may ask?

The HID projector headlights comes with the HID ballast..etc included.
Roughly $1800 for both sides.
The MY05+ non HID clear headlights are roughly $800 for the set.
All parts are available at Volvo Dealer.

There's no need to get the headlight module reprogrammed, on non-HID cars its plug and play; except you have to drill a 2mm hole in the CEM shunt to avoid the Bulb Failure message since HID is 35W vs Halogen 55w.

Wirings are pretty simple, some splicing needed; I believe any capable mechanic should be able to do the job. [thumbup]

Thanks a lot, sounds like a good project for the summer, just got to get the parts now.

Like ifnt420, I too acquired the MY07 HID projector assemblies and I worked with my independent Volvo mechanic here in the States to upgrade my halogen lights to HID projectors.

I removed the front bumper and the halogen headlight assemblies. The wiring on the parking/turn signals was reasonably straight forward but the Hi-Lo require some real splicing and we are still working through that. If anyone has wiring diagrams or information on how the projector/shutter moves for the high beam to the low beam, I would be very grateful

If anyone is interested, I have some MY04 halogen headlights (one is about 4 months old straight from Volvo) and I have equipped them with HID lights from SharpHID. I can provide the ballast, igniter, headlamps and the error cancellers. These would drop into a 2001-2004 S60 or V/XC 70 and are entirely plug and play and are error code free. Please PM if interested.

ifnt420, which of the 3 sets is best ?

The Projectors hands down. [thumbup]

You also get the extra Hi-beam from the Xenon shutter on top of the innner halogen Hi-beams. Night and Day difference.

ifnt420, you also changed out your tailights for the newer jewel ones.
My question is, do the 05,06,07 uppers and lowers plug and play with 01-04 ?

Got wiring diagrams and such and was able to activate the xenon shutters!

The lamps were a bit of a pain to wire, test and such but they were worth the trouble. Great lighting, good beam patterns and cut-offs... plus they look really cool http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbup.gif

My thanks to kamiar and ifnt420 for their time, patience and attention!

As to the question about the MY05+ rear lights was that question ever answered? Are the lights plug and play? Anybody replaced the MY01-04 F&R bumper covers with the MY05-07 bumper covers? I know the headlamp washing system is different and I am sure I can deal with that conversion.

Ben, do you need to remove the bumper when changing the headlight assemblies over?

Yes, so you might as well install the FMIC while its off. :D

lol, I had a FMIC on my last car.

I just bought the 05-07 drivers side halogen light (brand new)
Now looking for passenger side.

Im hoping there will be an improvement in light quality from the old 01/02 glass version. I'll be running a quality Philips HID kit through them too.

Digging up an old thread.
Ben could you please do me a favour. I need a night time shot of the bi-xenons up against a wall - for beam pattern test.

I might be able to get a set and I need to know if the LHD assemblies have a different pattern to RHD. Cheers mate.

I'm back in the States right now, so won't see my XC for another week or so.
But yeah, LHD and RHD are opposite beam patterns.
I bought a set of RHD MY07 Projectors for my buddy in Hong Kong and they are mirror image of my LHD. :D

Sure, I understand they are opposite but need to know if the beam is flat or if a angle plate has been inserted.
I have also seen these lights have the ability to switch from LHD to RHD via a control in the dash - called "tourist mode"

I still am keen to get a set and sell my brand new 2005 assembly ;)

Tourist mode will only work on MY07+ cars equipped with ABL from the factory.
Cant download or activate on pre MY07 cars. :(
The beam pattern on the ABL is not flat, it looks like this (solid lines) on LHD:
......____....___
___/....___/

And this on RHD:
____...._____.
.......\___.....\___

Best I can do without actual car being present. :D

ahh cheers mate.
If I get some LHD I will adjust the beam plates :P

Is there a Euro spec headlamp w/o the orange reflector or all the assemblies the same worldwide?

acools

The Euro headlights have the same reflector on the 'active' bi-xenon lights.

The R headlights in Europe come w/o the reflector.

I sourced my lights in the EU, and really the only difference is the EU light has a kink (as indicated in Ben's pictures) whereas the US lights are supposed to be straight. Also the US lights have a faint DOT stamped on the lens.

Not that I have seen.
Every EU version / LHD and UK/JDM / AU versions are identical - except for the projector beam plate.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here since I don's have an XC but a 2005 S60. However, this thread is the only one I could find with relevant information on exchanging base halogen headlights on an earlier model to the projector beam xenon ABL's. Does anyone have a wiring diagram or a writeup that I could give to the Volvo tech I'm working with to install the '07+ projector headlights?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
