Got a new transmission a couple of weeks ago. Everything running ok, but while changing oil today I noticed what looks like a light spatter of grease or oil on the new transmission, and also on the support frame. It appears that it might be coming from the driver side axle.

Here is the spray on the transmission case (caution, large pix):

and on the frame:

This is a picture of the frame from a slightly different angle, taken before transmission was replaced--no spray:

Might just be assembly grease, or maybe some residue that wasn't cleaned off the axle after assembly and is being thrown onto trans case and frame. On the other hand, I discovered that the tech that installed the transmission forgot to replace a few fasteners here and there, which doesn't exactly leave me feeling confident that everything's hunky dory. [nonono] I plan to show these pics to the Volvo dealer that installed the transmission, but thought I'd try to get some opinions until then. Any thoughts?

Any possibility the CV joint housing seal either wasn't installed properly or had too much grease on it?

Given the missing bolts and stuff, I guess anything's possible. I just looked at the pictures again and realized there's something else amiss. This bracket thing here (red arrow)...

isn't there anymore:

Wonder if it was, like, important or something. :(

Isn't the apparently missing part the rear mount?

OK, the service manager says that the missing piece is "some sort of vibration damper," although the tone of his voice makes me think he isn't really sure. I would think the part name would have given him some sort of clue. Anyway, the assumption is that the old one was not removed from the kaput trans before shipping it off to be reconditioned. SM claims it isn't "essential" but he has ordered a new one to be shipped overnight.

Verdict still out on the oil/grease splatter, and I'm a little puzzled why they can't figure it out given the ample clues here: grease splattered in radiual pattern surrounding CV boot, CV boot recently removed/reinstalled, splatter occcurred shortly thereafter. Gee, wonder where it could have come from? [cussing]
