The removal of the tailgate wiper blade as shown in my 2006 owner's manual does not look like the wiper arm I have on the tailgate. My wiper arm will rotate away from the glass about 60 degrees. The arm is in two pieces with a swival point halfway up the arm. Do I pull on the blade to remove while holding the arm? I don't want to force anything.

Volvo modified the rear wiper blade making it more difficult to change out. A poor design IMO as you will likely need to remove the arm altogether. For that, you can use the PDF instructions in the resources how-to-section.

Once that is done, you will see that the wiper blade pivots on a plastic post built into the its armature and is held tightly in place by four clips on the main part of the wiper arm.

Since the post is friction fitted, you will somehow need to gently coax it from the grip of the clips. I don’t know of any other way of doing this. In my case, I used a flathead screwdriver to spread the clips and then slowly pulled the two sections apart. Be careful, as the clips are fragile and can be easily broken off by using too much force. Same thing goes when reinserting the new wiper blade. If the clips break, you will find yourself buying a new arm from the dealer.

If anyone knows of a better method, please post your findings. :)

Thanks for the reply and information. If I understand correctly you can remove the blade without removing the wiper arm from the car, or am I wrong? I will take another look at the wiper arm. The blade does not need to be replaced so I have time to figure this out.

The metal wiper arm assembly broke off my tailgate. I removed the nut the looks like it holds on the wiper arm but the remaining part of the arm will not budge. How do I take the entire assembly off? I've followed the directions in the previous post but to no luck.

Thanks,
Bob

The base of the wiper arm is seated on a toothed fitting so you will need to work it loose by rocking the remaining part of the arm back and forth while gently pulling it straight out towards you. Whatever you do, try not to break off the tip of the plastic washer nozzle. If it's still tight, apply some silicon lubricant to the area. Be persistent as it will eventually come off.
