I know this topic has been discussed earlier but a quick "search" didn't reveal the post -- so please forgive me for starting a new post on this.

FYI...

My research has turned up the following for adding a 12volt outlet in the rear of an XC70 2003.

My local Volvo dealership can install this.

Part number for kit is 9184607 and costs $54.53

The labour charge for installing it is 1.5 hrs or $124.50

Has anyone installed this themselves, and if so was the installation straight forward?

Thanks.

Barry,
Check with Jason, you can add the rear 12V ($25) to your OSD order.

Kersti:

Thanks for that info. I immediately called my local Volvo dealership sales person and passed along what you stated concerning Jason's approval to install 12v outlet for $25 with OSD program purchase. My sales person said if that's so then consider it a done deal unless I hear back to the contrary.

Sooooooo, THANKS for your timely inputs -- I owe you ;-) Working together is very beneficial.

Hi Sharp,
Installed this myself, takes about 15 min. The installation is very simple, except for the 22mm. hole that you need to drill.

Thanks for your reply. I will certainly install this little gem (12v outlet) myself if I find the OSD factory installation is denied. Is that 22mm hole drilled into metal or some softer material. Is the wiring all in place or do you have to solder/connect and install wiring harness, and is it fused. Do you have a choice of placing it on either side of the car's interior rear panels or must it be placed in a specific location.

Hi Sharp,
Drilled into carpet/plastic material on the right side, all wiring is complete, just connect the wires, relay comes with fuse.
Order from Borton Volvo, you'll get a better price then quoted.

Yes -- I've ordered from Borton before with excellent results.

Is the 12v outlet live when key not in ignition? Thanks.

Yes, and will drain the battery if the cooler is connected.

Just curious, what do you guys use the outlet most often for? This XC is my first car with an outlet in the boot http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif and I have not really felt the need to have it but maybe I could just learn sth from you   http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

1. Power for electric pump to inflate rubber dingy or maybe a tire.

2. Power for use with a laptop computer while sitting on tailgate with hatch open. I have special ordered the picnic table and cushions for this purpose as well as for the odd cup of tea and cakes while taking a break http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

3. Power for a 12v vacuum cleaner.

4. Power for MP3 player while watching activities while sitting on tailgate.

5. Power for my DV Mini Camcorder while filming from rear of car.

It is just a bit easier to have the outlet in the rear rather than draping wires from the front to the rear of the car especially if a stell cargo barrier or the nylon netting dog barrier is in the way, and with dogs around.

For $25 the added advantage of the rear 12v outlet is well worth it IMO. For $200 it would not be and for $50 maybe.
