So the turbo on my 2006 XC70 has run perfectly since I got the vehicle. I could hear it just barely when I started the car and at low RPMs.
![]() But just the other day when I started the car, it sounded like the turbo was running full bore, and very loudly, and it doesn't stop until I shut it off. It runs all the time now, anytime the car is on, loudly. Any thoughts? |

Are you sure it is the turbo that is running all the time? If the car is parked idling does it sound like it is running?
Could be the rad fan that is running all the time due to a relay issue.......... We need some more details and JRL asked.

Here are some more details.
The 2006 XC70 has 79,505 miles, and has received regular scheduled maintenance. I thought it was the turbo because of the way it sounded like it wound up when I started it and wound down when I turned it off. Upon very close inspection it appears to be just the radiator fan which is running all the time, at idle, when driving. All the time. A relay issue was suggested as the cause of this. Are there other details that might narrow down or confirm the cause. I'm not sure what questions to answer. The help is very much appreciated. |

After doing some more searching around on this forum and others, it sounds like if the radiator fan is running all time while the car is on then the problem is likely to be the relay or controller.
My impression from reading about this is that both the relay and controller are integrated with the fan assembly. Does this mean the whole fan assembly needs to be replaced? ![]() That just sounds expensive, I have no idea what it might actually cost. |

I doubt you would need to replace the entire fan assembly to replace a relay.
Also, check to see if your clutch fan is dead (bearing noise as Allen noted). |

Plus, if you search the forum, the fan is known to run up to 30 minutes after the car is turned off, especially if its really warm and humid outside. Just a FYI. If it runs past that time, Bill's suggestion makes sense. Time how long it runs.
