    Default Active On Demand Coupling

Our '03 XC70 is at 75,000 miles and I am attempting to identify all maintenance that will help keep it going for another 75,000. One subject that I have been unable to find any comments on is whether or not checking or changing the special fluid in the Active on Demand Coupling is warranted. Any recommendations?

Sorry I can't help, because I dont know what an "active on demand coupling is." Is it the viscuous coupling? I thought '03s had Haldex.

    MoeB,

"Active on demand coupling" is the wording VADIS uses for the electronically controlled clutch device immediately before the rear differential. I believe it is the Haldex unit and it apparently contains about a liter of a special oil.

That would be the angle gear, probably not. Some people change the fluid don't know if it has helped or not.
No such nomeclature as "active on demand coupling" or let's put it this way, I work around these every day and NO ONE with Volvo has ever used that term
(Where do some of you come up with these things/names)?

    JRL,

I am not talking about the angle gear. The place where I came up with this name "Active on demand Coupling" is directly out of Vadis. The clutch portion of it has part number 8602807. The part number for the oil it takes is 1161641. I guess I can assume that since you haven't heard of it, it isn't commonly a maintenance problem.

I will be happy to print this PN. I am going to the dealer tomorrow and will see what this is and ask service about it but I will guess this is the angle gear just by the sound of it and the angle gear takes fluid

    JRL,

Thanks. It will be interesting to hear the dealer take on whether the oil ever needs replacement or checking. I know its not the angle gear. I've already replaced the gear oil in it.

Volvo does use the term Active on Demand Coupling, see:
    -------------------------------------
    Anti-Lock Braking & Traction Systems
    Item: TM-ABTS-0727(V2.2006) Page Count: 106
Models/Years This course manual covers the history of Volvo's braking systems and traction controls …more systems.
You will learn the background of Volvo's Anti-Lock Braking Systems, how it advanced to Anti-Lock Braking and Traction Control Systems, which started from the early Bosch systems, to the more current Teves Mk. 25 with Emergency Braking Assistance (EBA) and Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC). You will learn the principles behind how sensors measure, signal, how they affect the hydraulics to respond, and the importance of how all these components work together to create Volvo's technological braking and traction control systems. You will also learn how all of this works with the Haldex AWD - Active On-demand Coupling (AOC) featured on such vehicles as the XC90 and S60R/V70R.
ABTS-0727 is an entry-level course designed for Volvo technicians who have entry-level skills in multi-meter usage, wiring diagram usage, and VIDA usage. Tools required for this course: none. …short view

    Willy,

Thanks. That looks like very interesting material. It is strange that the "model/years" information for this publication stops at 1999 for the V70 because I didn't think Haldex AWD was added till about 2002 or 2003, yet the material description clearly states it addresses the Haldex?? Perhaps Volvo forgot to update the "model/years" entry when they updated the publication. I may have to break down and buy it. However, since I haven't found anything anywhere about anybody replacing Haldex fluid, it is doubtful my concern about its oil possibly needing preventive maintenance attention is warranted.

I can't tell anything more about the publication and dates, but it lookes as though Haldex simply uses the term AOC
to indicate what the coupling is about (sounds sophisticated as well, rightly so I suppose )
You may take a look at the Haldex website, some interesting technical info can be found there, eg. about
what is allowed with the AOC in terms of wheel inbalance or towing, or about the integration of the coupling in the management system(s).
