Thanks for the info vtl. I managed to pass through the cooler, pipes, hoses and filter without taking the bumper off.its a gheto fix but it works :-) it collects + 0.58 ml of atf.i filled it with the hoses not attached (worried about trapped air, maybe it doesn't matter) D&f again, the oil was dark red.
As for the ringing sound sometimes its there, and sometimes not,but I do feel a vibration on the steering wheel under heavy acceleration, usually uphil. Still waiting the b4 and the hfm.i haven't drove the car with the cooler installed...today 40+ on asphalt maybe 50c...

I followed the advice of forum members here and recently installed an aux Trans cooler with a thermostat. Where’s the best place to aim a laser thermometer to get a good reading of trans temps? The transmission itself? The final leg of the trans return line?

Amazing forum, truly thank you all. I got my 05 xc70 after a year of searching with 106K miles, hoping to keep it running well into 250K+ range.

Good results with the cooler, the shifts are smoother and engaging better. Garage shift are quicker surprisingly without clunks, not much delayed.i drove 150 km highway and mountain roads and it was good except around 3Rd gear in and out(hopefully b4 will solve that).definitely something is sliping in the angle gear or the propeller shaft? Went up a big Hill and something is ringing in a combination with a strong vibration. So I guess my first step will be to remove the propshaft?

Rubber mount around the bearing is probably tired. I had these same vibrations that I could not fix, until the driveshaft was replaced with the rebuilt one.

253k miles.wow, are u driving the original aisin gearbox?
I looked at the propeller shaft and didn't see any rubber only bolts to the angle gear, then a tripod in the middle, with a bearing and rubber around the bearing in the middle and bolted to the Vc in the back? Is it dangerous to drive lightly as possible,or I might damage anything? I now see that u had 02 V70 which you sold... Smart move haha. Maybe I shouldn't invest money in 01 v70xc but didn't know it's a bad year...it's a great car to drive on open roads and mountains, but city driving another story.
Once had to tow a friend's car for 5 km to service,it was a Ford Fiesta 950kg. The feeling was as I'm driving alone,it goes and pull's amazingly, also on snow it's excellent fun and a capable car. This winter was tough winter for the volvo maybe that's why I messed my awd.Btw I don't abuse the car,but I go on mountain 's and rough terrain

I got the car with 79k miles, crashed it couple of years ago at 175k, got a donor (same model/year/color) and did a swap of everything. Donor chassis had 42k miles more, so the swapped engine and transmission has about 210k miles at the moment.

The rubber piece around the central bearing gets weak and can't hold the driveshaft in place when it starts to oscillate. You'll have very weird vibration that can't be really "categorized".

My car is abused (0.8 bar mod, stock is 0.5), I take it to rough terrains as well, like http://www.jamesbayroad.com/ttr/index.html It holds very well. Besides cracked rims, bear-crashed bumpers, etc ;-)

02 V70 was a beautiful car with no transmission problems at all once the dreaded valve body was replaced with Sonnax. Last couple of years it was wife's car, who decided to sell it and buy a more girly vehicle - the XC60, which is worse in almost every aspect in my opinion.

Thats extreme. You really are going off road,as for the crash (hope u r OK after that) bear crashed bumpers wtf:-) can u please tell me roughly the price for a new sonnax valve body?As for the rubber piece, can I unmount the tripod connection next to the central bearing, get it out and install a new central bearing in place, along with the front bearing that connects to the angle gear,or only new shaft is an option?

    $630: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonnax-VBX-...N/372638470876

For the propeller shaft bearing you have to cut the driveshaft and then weld it back. And rebalance. Rubber piece can be changed separately, just slide it over the bearing. If I remember correctly, something VW-related fits, but have no more knowledge beyond that.

Yeah, I hit a bear about a month ago =)

Thanks for the help Vtl, astro and Howard, will keep with updates when I get the b4servo and hfm lubegard, while waiting for the parts I'll get the propshaft out and see if one of the two in total specialist in my region can fix it and more importantly balance the shaft.Next job will probably be vb or etm yellow sticker, so all the best forum members
