Default new user to volvo: 2001 XC70 Turbo questions

    Hello,
new to volvos, i recently bought a 2001 XC70 AWD turbo 2.4 with 138k , belts look new, engine compartment looks clean, questions:

im seeing oil wetting around the area of oil filter ( bad rubber ring install perhaps?) oil level is fine after 400 miles of driving so far.

im seeing wetness (oil) on the right side of the motor as well, wetting the frame behind the motor.

what should i look for? brakes were squealing a bit for the first 100 miles i drove it ( after sitting most likely at the lot i bought it from) now no squeals.
i have a set of abolon or whatever pads on the way. shoudl i just take it to a dealership and what should i expect thanks!

A 2001 XC is going to be expensive using the dealer for maintenance. First thing is clean the underside of oil, and then you can see it source, right side could be just a sloppy oil filter change or cam seals, crankshaft seal, oil gallery seals at the oil pan, etc, these old Volvo's are more to maintain than most cars and not cheap to own if you cannot turn a wrench yourself, A 2001 transmission can be your biggest headache of all if the maintenance is lacking.

Great on speed bumps, much better than air suspension
Less great for braking: front drum breaks are not at the wheels but close to the sweaty engine...

so the rear brake light is out and its throwing a message every time the brakes are used. is there suggested maintenance at this mileage (138k) for any particular system? unbelievably the car runs and drives great, im waiting for the other shoe to drop...did i get a lemon for my $2600?

The transmission most likely if it is a Auto could be due for a "gibbons flush" just do a search on this site, the brake light could be the rear harness, time to check it with a test light to see if it has power. A "lemon" it just needs attention it has some years on it.

If the brakes stopped squealing, and the pad thickness is OK, then I would focus on other things. Sitting for a while will result in squealing brakes.

Wetness on the right (passenger side) of the engine is indicative of leaks from either the cam seals or the front main seal. These are a bit of a pain to replace. Timing belt has to come off, and a couple of things come off the back (driver side) of the engine to lock the cams in place. You’ll need the cam locking tool to do the job.

But those seals fail when the PCV system is plugged up, and it does no good to replace seals that are being assaulted by engine crankcase pressure, because that crankcase pressure will blow even new seals out of the block.

So, I recommend a complete PCV system replacement. Every Volvo needs one, usually by 100,000 miles, and you’re well past that. Moderate skill level. Takes the better part of a day and $300 in parts. Do NOT skimp on the parts and try to clean/re-use the hoses or components. At this age, after decades of heat and oil exposure, those parts will simply break.

Be certain to clean the block-oil pan passage. I personally prefer to remove the oil pan for that work. (It’s a bit of a pain, 30+ small bolts, an hour or two to complete, and you’ll need anaerobic sealant) but a flexible wire brush, like a gun cleaning brush, could work.

This is an example of a good kit: https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4988...e-volvo-114177

Get to know IPD. A great source of maintenance and repair parts, performance upgrades, and technical information. I’ve been a happy customer for 20 years, over the course of 5 Volvo wagons owned.

Perhaps you can consider installing Vadis, a copy of the DVD can probably be found on the web.
Vadis normally expires 3 months after it was published by Volvo, but it is possible to use it
longer, I still use my 2004 edition.
