Default new user to volvo: 2001 XC70 Turbo questions

    Hello,
new to volvos, i recently bought a 2001 XC70 AWD turbo 2.4 with 138k , belts look new, engine compartment looks clean, questions:

im seeing oil wetting around the area of oil filter ( bad rubber ring install perhaps?) oil level is fine after 400 miles of driving so far.

im seeing wetness (oil) on the right side of the motor as well, wetting the frame behind the motor.

what should i look for? brakes were squealing a bit for the first 100 miles i drove it ( after sitting most likely at the lot i bought it from) now no squeals.
i have a set of abolon or whatever pads on the way. shoudl i just take it to a dealership and what should i expect thanks!

A 2001 XC is going to be expensive using the dealer for maintenance. First thing is clean the underside of oil, and then you can see it source, right side could be just a sloppy oil filter change or cam seals, crankshaft seal, oil gallery seals at the oil pan, etc, these old Volvo's are more to maintain than most cars and not cheap to own if you cannot turn a wrench yourself, A 2001 transmission can be your biggest headache of all if the maintenance is lacking.

Great on speed bumps, much better than air suspension
Less great for braking: front drum breaks are not at the wheels but close to the sweaty engine...

    That “thud” is not normal.

And it’s a sign that the transmission is responding slowly.

The slow response could be from worn out fluid (low viscosity as a result of shear) or a worn out valve body that can’t generate proper hydraulic (line) pressure to engage the gears.

I would change the fluid. A cooler line exchange. AKA Gibbons flush. Use a good quality fluid that meets JWS-3309.

also i noticed that, when stopped ,and then re-accelerating , when i place my foot on the accelerator ,and also when i take my foot off of the accelerator there is an intermittent thud or 'catch', not terrible sounding. i can feel it thump but then all is normal again? i dont have a huge amount of experience with automatic transmissions, just manual so maybe this is normal?
