Default Why don't driver's side replacement axles have the damper ring?

The passenger side axle helped my vibration so much, I decided to the driver's side, too, just for sick fun. The passenger side GKN was exactly like the OE part I removed, that was marked "GKN".

However, the GKN axle I got is different from the OE. The OE has that ring between the boots, it's a rubber suspended outer mass. Those are usually added to shafts to change their resonant frequency to counter vibration.

Soooo... GKN should know what's going on, any ideas why this replacement doesn't have the ring, besides manufacturing cost? Has anyone installed one without a ring and had a happy result?

Yep. Have a GKN on the XC. Works great.

    Can’t explain the ring...

Whew! If it's good enough for you, then done deal. Thanks for your time to post the reassurance!

I have a 2 or 3 y.o. GKN, it has the rubber piece. Yes, it was rubbing against sway bar end link, I had to slacken sway bar and push it further away.

I think that rubber piece is an extra mass for rotational moment equalization between short driver's side axle and long passenger's axle, to reduce torque steer effect.

I got a mechanical engineering degree millions of years ago, but ended up a salesweasel. The formal education made me skeptical of most things. Like, "hey, where's the ring and why is it OK to not have one now?" But, I need to double check, it seems like the shaft part is larger diameter than on the passenger side(?), maybe that's how they do the mass balancing. I can't wait to try to remove the original, everyone makes it sound like so much fun!

The mechanics changed the inner boot on my axle and I now have vibration only on start ups acceleration from a stand stiil. Is it possible to move this rubber mass balancer thing and make the drive shaft out of balance and make vibrations?

Rubber piece is for dealing with the torque steer, not for drive shaft balance.

OK thanks, didn't know that.do u know why I have small vibration like shims a bit, after changing the inner boot on the drivers side axle...axle is good, alignment has been made and only happens on hard acceleration from 0 to say 30-40 km/h?

When you did the inner boot, did you place the tripod joint back in the same precise relationship in the housing?

If you're off, i.e. if the tripod joint goes back in the housing, but rotated 120 degrees either way, then you will have destroyed the balance and you'll have a vibration under acceleration.

Thanks man, That's the thing...the mechanics probably rotate the tripod...they were changing the inner boot, but also the inner tie rods and fronts control arms bushings,
