Exclamation 2001 (55-50SN) Transmission ultimatum time

Hey guys. My '01 XC70 (with a rebuilt transmission) coasted to a stop while in Drive and no gears would move the car. Since then, I replaced the three solenoids that are normally the culprit last night, and the symptoms are the same. Goes into all gears, display reads the gear, and we go nowhere. I have disassembled the shift position sensor also. VIDA/DICE reads zero issues from the transmission. Do you all agree that it is time to just put in an entire new transmission?

Please tell me that you checked the fluid level first....

HAHAHA. That made me laugh..... Fluid has consistently been good since I performed a flush about 8 months prior to the first coasting to a stop. The odd thing is that VIDA shows a good TCM and zero faults.

You have no line pressure. Did you disconnect the upper (return) cooler hose and check that the ATF flows?

Also if you are really curious about how this transmission works, there's a very good technician's guide by General Motors: https://members.atra.com/TMG-AF23 I simply can't explain how good is it. This is an example:

Hydraulic flow for one of the modes!

ditto, sounds like no hydraulic pressure. I've seen these trannys die due to clogged internal filter screen preventing fluid flow. When this first happens, the tranny may work again briefly if left sitting for few days, the clogging debris falls from the screen allowing hydraulic pressure to develop before clogging it again. On the tranny that did this, the ATF dipstick showed particulates.

As this is a 2001 model, has the car had the neutral stop feature disabled, the transmission goes into neutral upon less than 3% throttle and brake applied, a malfunction in this system could leave it in neutral, have you applied the W switch to see if any motion is restored, this disables the neutral stop feature.

There are pressure port locations on the trans for Drive/Reverse you can access with a tap/hose/gauge to determine if you've got appropriate ATF flow/pressure. The readings you take may confirm you have no (or very low) pressure but they won't tell you why.

FirstVolvo directed me to a pdf of this guide online: ATSG SATURN/GM/SAAB/VOLVO/NISSAN AF23/33-5, AW55-50/51SN, RE5F22A
The pressure port locations and specs are on page 162 of this manual.

Could something be malfunctioning with the gear selection cable/switch on top of the transmission? If it was to get unhooked or worn out, would that produce OP's symptoms?

I disassembled and cleaned the selection switch before any of this happened, and my dash display promptly shows every gear change switch and position...Also, VIDA shows no errors whatsoever in the transmission. I suppose I just need to know if I just need to start looking for a transmission, or if I really want to keep the car.

Tried the W switch right off the bat, and still had no movement of the vehicle in any direction or gear. This is just crazy.
