Default Angle gear removal? AWD - FWD

I'm suffering an angle gear seal failure which seems relativly common among p2 xc70s. I'm a college student and looking for the lowest cost solution to keeping this thing running without having to top off the fluid once a week. I've heard there is potential for removing the angle gear altogether and turning the xc70 into a FWD. Would be a bummer to lose AWD but if it's cheaper than the ~$1000 I've been quoted for a reseal I'd consider it.

Yes, it was/is common on the 98-2000 v70awd to remove angle gear and driveshaft. You just have to make sure the coupling sleeve stays in the transmission. Various methods have been used from a metal bracket or a hose clamp on the axle ( both of which would be subject to wear, the axle will turn a different speed as the sleeve sometimes) to my favorite - glue it in with jb weld.
