    Default Steering column locked

I have a 2008 xc 70 and a few times recently a warning that the steering column is locked (which it isn't) and the engine won't start. Can anyone provide me with some insight?

The first time this happened the warning was gone after a couple hours and we drove home. This time the car still won't start (after two days)

You will probably have to replace the ignition switch, it's the part you put the key in. Last one I replaced cost about $650, the part requires a software download to make it work.

The first step would be to use VIDA to help diagnose the cause of the no start/column locked message.

You may have somehow triggered the "immobilizer" (anti-theft engine lock out).

To reset the immobilizer, using the driver's door key, lock and unlock this door 5 times in succession.

It ended up being a bad sensor. Replaced the sensor and had to "reprogram" the computer (a total cost of $1250). Thank you for your responses to my post.

What sensor? What part number did they sell you?
