How to Replace fuel cap strap

Having trouble trying to replace the fuel cap rubber strap on my 2008 XC70, cannot figure how to get the old hard plastic ring off the cap and put on the new one without cracking the whole thing,can anyone help!

Must be a slow forum. I took mine off (2001 V70XC) with a medium flat blade screwdriver. Insert the blade between plastic ring and cap, then turn the blade and work around the cap until the ring pops off. The ring is stiff but still slightly flexible.
