Default Recommendations for used engine: 2004 XC70 - Any places to use or avoid?

As some of you may recall my post of a few weeks ago, my 2004 XC70 with 165,000 miles (likely) broke a rod bearing and who knows what else. After much consultation with my very trusted dealer in Grand Rapids, we feel it's too risky to spend money dropping the pan and just replacing the bearing. They feel that more is going on and it will end up costing more time and money in the end to try to fix.

I am perfectly fine buying a used engine. They have been looking and have some leads. But for my own edification, does anyone have knowledge and/or experience in find good used engines from reputable sources? Does going this route carry a lot of risk?

The rest of my car is very structurally sound, has new tires, and has recently had all of the fluids flushed. Everything is in working order. If I can spend $3,500-$5,000 on an engine and get another 3-5years out of the car, I'll be happy.

Erie Volvo (www.erievovo.com) has been great on smaller used parts (radios, seat belts, power steering pump, and a few other things that I've purchased) and they offer a good warranty. Start by calling them.
    Current Fleet:
    2016 Tundra Crewmax 4WD 1794
    2005 MB S600 (126K, Michelin AS4, HPL 0W40)

    2004 V70R (143K, six speed M66, HPL 5W40)
    2004 XC90 (235K, HPL 0W30 Euro)
    2002 V70-XC (295K, HPL 0W30 Euro)
    2002 V70-T5 (225K, IPD bars, Bilsteins)
2001 V70-T5 (125K, IPD downpipe, cat back and other mods)
1932 Packard Sedan (straight 8, dual sidemounts, original paint and interior, Shell Rotella 15W40)

I'll add Atlanta European Auto Parts (http://atleuro.com) as another great source of used parts although they typically do not have the extent of bits like Eire. As an example, I've bought two complete sets of used callipers from them for less than $250 CDN total and the condition of them were nearly better than what I can get from rebuilds here.

    Cheers,

I always get used engines from LKQ, mileage verified, 6 month and 1 year warrantied available.

it's up to your shop to make a judgement call on whether or not to accept it, as far as looks go.

Erie has a great guarantee and you will be spending a heck of a lot less than 3K on a motor
The labor will be twice++ the cost of the motor
