Volvos are legendary for their high mileage ability but I can`t help but wonder how the current crop of computer controlled everything V70`s will cope. And the XC has even more complications to make long term ownership potentially quite daunting - especially without warranty cover.

So, who has done the highest miles in an XC?? My `98 is approaching 88K (miles, not kilometres). I`m sure that`s nowhere near the highest??

I have owned the 850 since 1998. Service/reliability issues have been common to both fwd and awd cars; O2 sensor, ABS control unit, lower control arms, upper engine mount, etc.

The original front rotors lasted until 130k km. I have not yet had air conditioning (evaporator) replaced, but we are just coming into warm weather here in central Ontario.

No problems with the awd components, but I have noted on one work order that there was some "sweating" around the bevel gear housing. The fluid was right where it should be, so I am simply keeping an eye on this.

That all sounds pretty reasonable to me, Neil.

Any plans on switching the 850 AWD for an XC of some description in the future??

I am not considering the purchase of a new XC in the near future for a few reasons.

I have kept me previous Volvos for a long time. Before the 850, I had a 1986 740 GLE that travelled 380k km over 13 years. I bought the 850 with somewhat the same expectation. In fact, at 160k km, I am almost half way there already.

The 850 is very a very comfortable and capable car. We just came through on of the toughest (longest, coldest, snowiest) winters in recent memory. The awd performed perfectly throughout the worst that a Canadian winter could offer.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the problems I have had with the 850 have been common to fwd cars. I am not yet convinced that the awd components on this car are as fragile as some reports make them out to be. However, when and if the driveline requires expensive repairs, I might think twice about my strategy of 10+ years of ownership. Not yet, though.

I also prefer driving a car equipped with a manual (read gearshift AND clutch) transmission. Unless I purchase a new R, a manual transmission is not offered on any other XC in North America.

Ask me again five years hence.
