We all get attached to vehicles but if this is your only car at this time, you need to take the emotion out of this decision. If you can magically get this fixed for less than $1500, then it might be worth it. With a functioning tranny, your car is worth around $3000 in the US. Not sure how that translates to values in Canada, but if you save this car, you will do it for something other than financial reasons. I see lots of '03-'05 XC's advertised between $3000-$6000. Most have around 150K+ miles and working transmissions. No way I'd put a new transmission in your car, but I have no history/memories with it. Good luck with your decision.

You can check all the solenoids' operation by Vida, it will tell you if they work the way they should or not, so if you find out that a solenoid is the culprit, you can fix the transmission by a valve body job only.

I talked to the dealer this morning, and asked about testing the solenoids through VIDA. The adviser asked the tech who had worked on my car, and was told that they can't test the operation of the solenoids before dis-assembly. That means that changing the solenoids would be a hit, or miss situation. If it works, everything's fine, but if it doesn't I've put another $1,200 into the car. I don't like those odds on such a high mileage car. They suggested replacing the transmission as the best way to assure a positive result.

There is a feature in Vida where you can run a test through all solenoids, I am sure about it... But how that will help your situation I am not realy sure....

Changing solenoids is not the same a rebuilding the valve body. New solenoids in a worn bore still won't work correctly.
