    Default Axle bearing carrier... toast?

So, I'm on my second front passenger side axle shaft (both sides actually) within about a years time.
From a stop, and turning left while applying throttle, I still get a small amount of vibration/wobble from that passenger side shaft. I'm wondering if the axle bearing carrier is toast, and how would I test that? Why else would I be going through them so fast?
BTW, car is currently FWD until I can find out whats up with my Haldex.

Wow...two sets of axles in a year? Bad rebuilds, I would guess...

I would put it up and check for play in that bearing. They do wear out eventually...

If the car is up and the weight is off the suspension - grab the wheel at the 3 and 9 and check for play, then do the same at 6 and 12...if the play is the same - it's the bearing. If the play is only there at 3 and 9, then you could have a worn tie rod end on that side.

How is the front bushing on the lower control arm?

Astro, are you also asking I check my wheel bearing?
Good catch on the the control arm... I noticed my aftermarket control arm has developed a tear in the rearward bushing. In fact every time I apply brakes the dynamic changes and I get a strong pull to one side (car has new front susp., tires m/b, alignment, tie-rods are fine).

I was, in fact, suggesting that you check the hub bearing...that might be a cause as well, though they're usually noisy...forgive me if I was unclear..

For the axle carrier bearing (behind the block), I have no idea other than to grab it and pull sharply up/down and see if you can feel any play...

FWIW, I have a very slight wobbble under acceleration at 45-60 MPH...and think it might be that bearing as well...but I can't feel any play.

I just rebuilt the front suspension - Lower control arms, ball joints, struts, spring seats, strut mounts...so, by process of elimination, there are only a few remaining possibilities...

    Cheers,

The axles I replaced last time around were from FCP, as are the control arms... not impressed.
Anyway, I think you may be onto something in regards to the wheel bearing... it couldn't hurt to check it, even though i don't have symptoms.

I'm having my 99' A4 wheel bearing done as we speak... on those cars it just gets noisier... you couldn't tell by feeling for play. I find the Volvo is the same, just noise, no wobble, when I changed out my front left WB 2 years ago.

Thanks Rockitship - good to know. I have yet to do a single hub on a P2 car...or an axle...though I look at that carrier bearing so close to the heat of the turbo and wonder about its life...

I would think that you could feel play in it...but maybe not...
