    Default replacement Battery

    2005 XC70 205,000mi
The current battery appears to be original (if I am reading the date code correctly)
I usually have my preferances for batteries but this one seems to be an odd size.

Are there recommendations for replacement batteries -- besides the dealer ?

    thanks

Taking into account the inconvenience a flat battery usually implies, I always choose the
largest model that will fit. In this case that should be something like a 94Ah model.
I also prefer a model that I is "maintainable".

Could someone post a link to some battery replacement guidelines? Search finds posts talking about a "proper way", but I found no actual protocol. Thanks.

Autozone have a decent replacement battery, you can get the Duralast Gold or Platinum depending on how much spare capacity you want. Both require maintenance like the Volvo battery and include hookups for the external vent.

Found a Sears battery sim to what we use in our plow trucks : $181 + tax
It is the same technology as the Platinum series and is a "glass mat" with vent holes
    Diehard Advanced Gold #50748 -- group 48, 760 cca and 70ah

    same physical size as oem

next to read the change over thread

then fix the trailer wires -- ground broken

    thanks all

The replacement batteries sold at volvo dealers are Johnson Controls (their private brand is Interstate). They make groups 48 and also the H series, I think your car has an H6 in the new battery nomenclature.
I wouldn't pay $181 for a battery when the battery that is in there that lasted 7 years is a basic battery. Putting a battery in the trunk puts the least stress on it. AGM is the technology for batteries in abusive places with high evaporation and physical stress (like off road racing).
P2's have the longest battery life of any Volvo models in my memory. The P2's that I replace batteries in before 7 and 8 years age have had owner's kill the battery by leaving key on a few times or other issues stressing the battery. I replace batteries on 2004 models a lot these days as they are going 8 years regularly.
You can get a JC made battery at Wal-Mart for less than $100 or at one of the warehouse clubs (costco, sam's, BJ) for that range too.

In my experience Delco is the only brand of battery that has continued to function past their warranty time period. The one for the XC70 (48 I believe), runs about $85 to $100. The battery in my Saab 9-5 gave up the ghost a year ago, and I took the 5 year old Delco out of my XC70 and placed it in the 9-5 and got a new Delco for the Volvo. The battery in the Saab still going strong at 6 years old now.

I have no doubt about Delco batteries, but my original Volvo battery (whatever brand that may be) is still in excellent shape after 9,5 years!
