Overheating.......Sorta?

I have a 99 xc70, I had a problem with the cooling system a few months ago. After driving it for an hour or so, it would boil over after turning it off. the temp gauge would show the temp was in the normal range (dead center of the gauge). I then blew the engine up on the highway...ran out of coolant. So I replaced the engine and the same problem is still there. I loose about a quart of coolant everytime I turn it off after driving a hour or so. Short trips of 20 mile or less there isnt a problem. I check the cooling fan and it is working. I watched the gauge when I turned it off and there is no temp spike. It appears it is only leaking from the coolant tank/cap.

Has anyone seen this before?

I have a 97 Volvo 240 Dl. On a hunch I switched radiator caps. Problem went away....wish I thought of that before I lost an engine.

take a towel and dry off the reservoir and watch to see what is leaking. I just replaced my reservoir because it broke, and replaced all the hoses except the long skinny one from the top of the radiator. sounds like you need a new coolant temp sensor also and maybe thermostat. even though the coolant fan runs, is it making any noise like going bad with the bearing? do you have a good level sensor for the coolant?

The easiest and the most foolproof way to test what the problem is to do a pressure test on the cooling system.
Takes 5 minutes and you should see where the leak is coming from
