01 XC Clear Codes?

Long story short had a random transmission hiccup 3 months ago - no recurrence and car drives fine but 'Transmission Service Required' message and 'Service' light stay on all the time now.

Can clear the message but have to do it every single time; the 'Service' light stays lit all the time.

Not going to pay a dime for VADIS hookup to clear this code[s;] will disconnecting the battery long enough clear this or is it embedded in memory somehow? 2001 XC.

Try servicing it or learn how to clear the service light yourself
As for the tranny, there probably IS a permanent fault in there!

That message can result from something as simple as a slightly mis-adjusted gear position switch (the one on the gearbox linkage) amongst other things. JRL comments are fairly close. Buy yourself a DiCE, download a copy of VIDA to a laptop, and learn to analyze and clear the codes yourself. Assuming you have a laptop, all of that won't cost you too much more than one VIDA hook-up at the dealer and you have the ability then to deal with such things from then on.
