    Angry 2001 V70 xc B5244T Lifters chattering

My wives v70 xc has never leaked any oil so only check it every once in a while, well today heard top end chattering.... So checked oil, 2 QUARTS LOW. So i filled her up still sounds like lifter chattering. Hooked it up to diagnostics tool and misfiring on #2 cylinder... So not sure what to do engine has 240,000+ miles on it and would like to keep it going but not sure where to get parts or what i need to replace???? Any Ideas???

Are you certain that the sound is lifter clatter and not the spark from a bad coil pack arcing to ground?

I would start by pulling and replacing the no. 2 coil pack...

Then, I would change the oil. Just because it's been run low....and use a good 5W30 synthetic...

Hydraulic lifters (which in this engine are merely lash adjusters on the rockers...) will clatter if they start to get clogged with sludge - then they're slow to build pressure to take up the lash...since the oil passages are tiny, it's easy for them to get clogged...and the best way to clean an engine is slowly, with fresh oil, a good A3/B3 synthetic can make a difference in a few hundred miles...

So I changed the coil pack and it the noise went away. It was definitely arcing and the boot was all jacked up and cracking. So after i changed that I guess I should have unhooked battery and let it reset the computer cause took it down the road and it sounded like it backfired a little and failed my MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor) and I had just replaced it with brand new Bosch OEM part... AHHHHHHHH I love my car but seems like when something messes up its like a chain reaction. I even tried cleaning the MAF but it wouldn't help So now i gotta see if it even has a warranty and if Not there goes another $100. Anyone know where to get a good Cheap MAF I bought last one from Autopartswarehouse.com but man this is getting costly good thing I do my own work or I would get me a different car.

For good parts prices, I go with either FCP Groton or with Discount Volvo parts (Volvo of Dallas)...

Hey, at least the lifters were good...so that problem was an easy fix!

    cheers,

How long ago did you replace it? You might be able to exchange it

Well of course the MAFS had a year warranty that ran out 3 months ago so ordered one with 5 year warranty for $120 after next day shipping. Got that put on runs good then started to smoke when if gave it some throttle passing someone and threw the good ol tps code p0121 so maybe I can get away with cleaning the TB but looks like I gotta clean the pcv system and repair. Its got over 240K but had never smoked bad like that. bad thing is I'm not even sure if I have the new software loaded cause I just bought car about two years ago. Anyone know how I can tell if it has new update?

If you haven't done the PCV system - it's time to do it. Most people have trouble around 100K...many go pretty far without doing it (I haven't yet at 160K, but that seems to be the exception). Try the glove test and replace the whole set of components if it fails. Plugged PCV will cause a host of other problems - oil leaks, fouling of intake, etc....

You say it's the MAF, but you don't mention a MAF code...I would clean the MAF, clean the TB (particularly if you've got blowby from a failing PCV), clear the codes and see where you are with engine performance...
