    Default Brake sounds - General

99 xc - when the pads/rotors are on their last legs. do they make a certain sort of sound. I began to notice a sort of (im not good with sounds on these cars) sound like your downshifting to a lower gear wine. NO, its not the trans cause when I put it in neutral it still makes it.

Often times the pads grumble or growl when they are thin.

no, no noise maker. easy to take a look and also measure rotor or feel for a big lip on it!

A whine or other noise could be wheel bearings too. Is the noise speed dependent and does it change while turning?
