    Default Blown transmission

have a 2000 Xc with a blown transmission (has been leaking fluid for sometime) and has run dry now its in pretty bad shape..
    what are my options?

this XC has been run without the rear drive shaft for sometime so im wondering if i can put a regular FWD only transmission in there.
What all is involved if indeed it is possible?
    TCU?
    axle shafts?

    etc..

    thanks and all the best

    Axle is different
I would guess you can use the same TCU. Otherwise from the bevel gear output, the transmissions are the same.
Pretty sure they use the same solenoids, etc

Since this transmission is sourced from Toyota and is used in a variety of Toyota, (also SAAB) vehicles, there must be independent Toyota shops out there that can, (but not necessarily WILL), do trans work on the XCAWD cars. I am having a devil of a time finding a RELIABLE trans shop to work on my 2000 XC. Mention "Volvo" and they all get a look of panic on their face. Most cit a lack of availability of parts. I stopped at local Toyota dealer and they said same thing as Volvo dealer; "We just R&R the trans and replace it with one from TOYOTA" However, on their USED cars, they replace them with salvage yard units.
I HAVE found a tiny number of trans shops that will work on Volvo FWD/AWD, but they all seem kinda shady and all hit you with a price designed to make you go away, often MORE than the Volvo dealer.. What is it with auto trans shops? There seem to be more shady types in trans shops than any other are of auto repair. I have been victimized more than once; on my much loved mint condition Dodge Diplomat cop car, (you'd think ANY trans shop could do a decent job without "comebacks" on a 727 Torqueflite), and TWICE on my wife's mini van, by shops recommended to me by folks I thought were reliable.
I'm looking now at indie Toyota shops to see if any of them don't give me the willies.
You'd think you could get anything automotive done in DETROIT!
After repeated flushes using the "Gibbons method", using a variety of "magic juice" trans additives, numerous changes of an in-line filter I installed, and a fair number of codes, (I bought an INNOVA 3160 scan tool for $200), I have come to the conclusion that the clutches and possibly a couple of bushing are the main culprits. ALL of the codes shown have related to solenoids being "stuck" which cleared and did not return after flushing. This indicates to me that the debris from the deteriorating clutches is causing most of the problems. The additives seem to be mostly detergents or solvents and do their work by acting on the accumulated sludge; that is why the fluid was always black after adding them, no matter what the color of the additive is. One shop offered a flush for $175 using a "cleaner" and a refill with "synthetic" fluid. He said that "That cleaner turns the fluid black and then we flush it and replace the fluid" This is exactly what happened regardless of what I added to me trans, so I'm guessing that's what ALL of these magic elixirs do.
I DID find a place in Florida that offers rebuild kits for these AW50-40LE transmissions and other variants, including clutch packs, bushings, seals, solenoids, torque converters, valve bodies, etc, along with the prices of each. I'll dig up the website and re-post it as "Parts source for AW transmission parts" Don't know the quality! No feedback or experience!

I don't know why your driveshaft is out, but I also have a near new propshaft. My bevel gear is dusted....send me a PM and I can give you more details...

I've had many problems with trans shops either not wanting to work on my 2000 V70XC or telling me that they can't source parts, or quoting sky high repair cost so I'll take it somewhere else. Look online for a company called MAKCO. Parts list for the AW50-42LE trans, plus PRICES for parts, too, so you can compare with parts cost quoted from your shop. Or do it yourself if you have the facilities, tools and skill. Remember that your shop has to make a bit off ordering/selling you the parts to do the job. That is only fair and a reasonable part of the price quoted for the repair, but you'll be able to see if your shop is out of line on prices. See thread "Why won't trans shops touch my 2000V70XC?" for my experience to date with this same problem. Also "AW50-42LE parts source found". My car is in shop now having used 80k trans installed, (less than the 97k on my car, thought it worth a try) $550 for trans with 6mo replacement guarantee, plus shop gave me a discount on labor charge. Book says 9.1 hours labor to R&R. Estimated R&R charges app. $650, (depending on any extra parts, (seals, etc), needed. Should be done Monday/Tuesday next week.

    UPDATE
Used trans installed. Hard to find shop willing to work on this car, but shop did decent job. Now about 4500 miles and 4 1/2 months later with no problems, dreaded flashing arrow returns along with P01618 code, P0722 and a host of other ABS, output speed sensor and other codes. Lost drive a couple of times, too. After re-start, all OK. Shop gets car back tomorrow for 3rd try at finding problem. I'm thinking fault in harness between trans and Motronic. Maybe internal fault in harness or bad connector. Sick of this car.
