    Default towing 5000 lbs with my 2005 XC90 ??

Next winter I'll have to haul around 5000lbs including tandem wheel trailer and load occasionally and for about 15 miles on a 30mph speed limit road. Two guys told me that I won't be able to haul that with my XC and one of them told that the parts in the tranny are mounted on nylon bushings and as soon as it heats it breaks the tranny and welcome the $$$$$ repairs. I would like to keep My XC but I will have to haul. Is the nylon bushings thing is real? I know that the towing capacity of my 2.5 turbo is 5000lbs and it has a trans cooler and 5000 hitch. My 4 wheels trailer has hydraulic breaks.
I would be glad to have opinions on this (beside telling me to buy a huge pick-up lol)

Personally, I wouldn't but if you decide to do this anyway, for God's sake install a transmission cooler and new fluid.
If you don't do that, I can almost guarantee you a new tranny will be needed

My Xc already has a tranny cooler. Are you talking about installing a bigger one?
    Thank's for your help

    Default Towing Question

I can't answer wrt an XC-90. I CAN give you anecdotal evidence of trailering to near the max capacity on our XC-70. I have 15,000+ KM of trailering (26' sailboat) experience with the XC-70. This includes across Canada as well as across the Rocky Mountains to our island home in BC. Speeds were at the legal highway limits (110 kph through the Rockies) and the turbo was in frequent demand. The boat/trailer combo with supplies is over 3,000 pounds and the XC-70 is rated for 3,300 pounds.

We have over 215,000 km on the car and have never experienced a problem. It does not burn any oil and the transmission remains smooth in terms of shifting.

While this is anecdotal, I assure you that the Volvo XC-70 tranny remains in better shape than our Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited did with that level of use. I know everyone is fearful of the Aisin unit, but we have been very impressed with its capabilities. I do subscribe to the more frequent than usual oil change mantra when towing (tranny and motor), but we have been very fortunate thus far.

Thank's for taking the time to share that experience.
What I'll need to haul is a 16 foot 4 wheel trailer with hydraulic brakes that weight 1450 pounds carrying a tracked vehicle (bombardier BR100) that is supposed to weight 3100 pounds. I'll drive drive that only in the winter only and I know that I'll have to drive with no hurry. It's a 20 minutes ride on a 30 mph speed limit road it a couple of stiff but short slopes. I would like to try it now to answer my question but the vehicle is not completly restored yet and I can't put it on the trailer.

That should be fine. If you were hauling it at freeway speed it would be a different story. I believe the xc90 is rated at 5000 as long as there is nothing else in the car. I wouldn't haul more than 2500-3000 at speed, too much work for a car.

Get a little run up on the hills so the load pushes up most of the way, add enough throttle to make it to the top at about 20-mph. That will keep the strain off the
trans. Avoid starting on a uphill with the load.
