    Question '03 XC70 won't start

My '03 xc70 with 118k miles won't start. I suspect it is a fuel line issue, perhaps the pump. We were headed home from a camping trip in the desert, stopped for a break, and could not restart the car. Ignition and starter crank, it seems to fire, but won't catch and run -- acting like a fuel line issue or a flood. I had all the 105k maintenance done months ago and doubt that the fuel filter is the problem. I had taken my car to Denver for maintenance where we found an excellent Volvo mechanic, but now live 3 hours from Denver and have been told many cautionary tales about the Volvo service in this valley being predatory and opportunistic. My concern is that this is a minor issue that a shop is going to use as a smokescreen to fleece me. Any thoughts, recommendations and advice are deeply appreciated.

Check engine light on? If so, you have codes that can help with diagnostic. Unplug MAF and see if that changes anything.

Not sure where else to start.

No messages or error codes. Check engine light is not lit.

    Default wont start

Im nee to volvos. I had several cars that did the same. It turned out the timing belt stripped or broke.

I dont know if volvos have the same system (that the valves and pistons wont touch) if the timing belt gives out. Its called interference engine when they do touch.

You could disconnect the fuel line at the filter to see if you have fuel flow.

An easy way to check the timing belt is to remove the top cam/t-belt cover held down by 2 clips and 2 torx bolts. You can see the timing belt riding over (or not over if broken) the cams gears after removal. Googled and found a pic

    BTW, these are interference engines.

Timing belt was replaced recently along with the rest of the 105k maintenance checklist.

Check the fuel pressure - there is a valve under the cap on the fuel rail on the front of the motor. Release the pressure into a cup with the ignition off for a few minutes then turn the key to II and check if you have pressure again. That will tell you if the fuel pump works at all. The fuel sensor can be read through the OBDII live data with the appropriate reader.

I log about 300 kPa fuel pressure (43.5 psi).

I would unplug the MAF and try to see if it starts too.

This is an interference engine...lose the belt and you'll bend valves...most high performance engines are interference engines...more valve travel/overlap for more power...

    Default belt

Thanks Astro. I will need to do my belt.

On the 03 that wont start, how was the fuel pressure? Have you been able to look at the coils?
