Default 2005 XC70 Transmission and Alarm Maintenance

I have read about older models, 02 and 03, having transmission issues and I am experiencing similar problems with my 05 (less than 100K). When downshifting it drops pretty hard, also when going from neutral to drive there sometimes is a delay. What is the prognosis?

Also, my alarm maintenance light just came on, what is that attributed to?

Sounds like your tranny has issues. Do you have the ATF change history?

Some 01 owners have alarm's internal electronics fail. Likely due to an exhausted internal battery that leaked. Haven't heard of this on the later models. Don't know if Volvo kept the same design. See "Alarm Service" in this link for more info.

Yes, the design is the same. In fact, I used a rebuilt '05 module to replace the expired one on my '02. They seem to go like clockwork at the 7-8 year mark; due to, as you suggest, a bad battery or circuit damage from a bad battery. They can be rebuilt for cheap (like $10 or so) if the circuit board is still good and just needing a new Li-ion battery.

Interesting... I read it could be rebuilt as well. Quick google found this link

Looks exactly like directions on my 01 T5. To back out the temper proof bolt, I just used a dremel tool and cut a slot across the top for a flat head bit to remove it.

Perhaps I should take the one out of my 01 V70XC and just replace the battery. Its probably due or past due to expire. Quick research on battery packs yields no easy direct replacements. RC 7.2V 500+mAH packs would work but are bigger due to 6 1.2V cells. Probably doesn't fit in existing space. This external mount solution sounds like a good idea

Hey, just found me another repair project. Nothing left to fix so have to start working on preventive stuff

When I did mine the hardest thing was finding a battery of proper voltage, capacity and physical size. The original is a 3 - disc battery pack so finding a single battery to do the same job was tricky but eBay came to the rescue. I remember writing something up on the specifics so its out there somewhere. Not really hard to do and it make you wonder why Volvo didn't change the design just a bit to allow for a simple battery replacement. But then again, charging $200 plus labour is better than a simple $10 battery replacement I guess.

When I got the alarm system service required on the T5 - it turned out to be the siren...but when I pulled the siren (thank you Howard for the directions), the board was fried...not chemically, from a leaking battery, but it looked like it had really overheated. New siren, all was well...just be careful drilling out the rivets - easy to get them hot, then they melt the plastic and spin...

But I agree - the battery should be replaceable.

If you're having trans issues - first thing to check (as Howard asked) is the service. You should check the level first - trans warm (not engine, not the same, drive it for 30 minutes, then check), idling in neutral, level ground, just like the OM says...

Personally, I would change the fluid simply based on mileage/age. Worn fluid is lower viscosity (breaks down over time...) and that can cause problems. Make sure you use a JWS-3309 spec fluid, like Toyota T-IV or Mobil 3309.

On the ones I have rebuilt, all have had the board's lacquer finish partially removed by a leaking battery, but all worked once I cleaned things up and replaced the battery. Not to say that some boards may not be totally damaged by acid, but just because they may not look that great does not mean they can't be salvaged. Once you clean things up, look closely at the traces for any breaks. Also look at any of the board-mounted components for obvious damage. If you see any, then the board probably isn't worth the hassle. The unfortunate thing is that to test the siren module it has to be in the network. I couldn't figure out any way otherwise to see if even the siren would sound. Therefore, it does become a bit trial-and-error; but at a $10 battery and a bit of time versus $200 for a new module, it might be worth a try.

Bill - I appreciate it...and that was my intent when I pulled the module, but the board was cracked through in 2 places, it looked like it had been held up to a lighter (not missing varnish, blackened plastic)...so, rather than pay local dealer prices, I put the fender liner back on, sealed up the connector, and ordered a new siren from Darrel Waltrip Volvo...

    Astro:

Yep, in some cases it is best to just do new.

I basically lucked out on mine as far as usable boards. Another not so brilliant design by someone associated with Volvo (I feel bettering thinking it might have been a supplier versus Volvo itself). With a stupid price tag on it to boot!
