    Default filter wrench price

Any one know what the Volvo dealership is asking for a oil filter wrench?
Mine is on so tight that no band wrench or strap or anything from the local parts stores cab get it off. They have cap wrenched just not the right size. Since this is my only car I will have to get one at the dealership I can't wait on shipping. Too bad I already dropped the oil out or I would order one from ipd.

Is there a local shop that Would carry this? Any tricks to get it with the band wrench or nylon style wind up thing?

    Unhappy Oops

Sorry, misread your message about not being able to order online. Having vision problems and don't always see all the words.

2 tricks I can think of:

With the band wrench, stick a piece of sandpaper or rubber between the wrench and filter, that will give the wrench more bite (if a slipping wrench is your problem).

Or, drive a screwdriver through the side of the filter, then use the screwdriver handle as a wrench, and just turn the filter. I've used that one before with great success. It's a bit messy though, so have your drain pan ready.

Had the same issue when I did my first oil change. If I remember correctly I paid the stealer $45 for the cap wrench.

Can't do that on these Volvos. oil filter is just an filter element inside a plastic housing. The housing gets reused.

This is what I have, its the top of the line and a solid chunk of aluminum. Provides a perfectly tight grip without any give. Usually, to remove the wrench requires tapping the ratchet in the opposite direction to get it loosened from the plastic housing.

Price is about $13-$20 online. If you can find a overnight shipping retailer, might cost you another $15. Just FYI so you know how much its worth.

Dealer prices for parts vary all over the map. I've seen oil filters for $5 and $20 (my local dealer, ouch)

If you end up damaging the housing (I've known people that have done that). Your local napa sells a replacement for $15.

Good luck, Sounds like StunemanMike's suggestion of rubber or sandpaper might just work with a strap wrench

I did not know that! Thanks for the correction.

And there's yet another Volvo factoid I've just learned!

That nylon strap thing just squeezes not much leverage for turning.
It's made me mad enough to stab a screwdriver through it. First oil filter I couldn't get unscrewed.

I hope its not $45.00. Thats just crazy. Car makers and the dealers don't seem like they like their customers after you drive off the lot. I mean come on be reasonable.

    Thanks for the replies.

Solid aluminum one is here: http://www.etoolcart.com/volvo-Oil-F...V9995679D.aspx for about $40.

I have the IPD one: http://www.ipdusa.com/products/5022/...ket-heavy-duty which now goes for about $40...though I bought it for about $25 a few years back...

Both will work...straps, big channel locks, etc. not recommended as you can damage the housing and it's $25 or so...that's money better spent on the wrench.

IPD sells a cheaper one for about $11, but I haven't used it, so I can't vouch for it...

I've used the cheaper ipd one with success, although it's only been used twice now. Seems solid enough.
