    Default something cracked...

I noticed a plastic piece has cracked near the engine. It doesn't look good. What is it and how easy is it to replace? See the attached pic.

I think that is the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) (aka Flame Trap) breather hose.

    $25 from IPD

As for "how easy", from what I have heard and read, it is doable, though not particularly fun.

Hmm... That looks like a lot more was done than just the breather hose. Maybe just to do the breather hose it's not so bad?

The picture showing the hose on the engine above, was taken while a full PCV service/repalcement was being done. However becuase of the routing, you will likly have to pull the intake manifold off to do it, but have a close look at the hose path and see how it is, you may be able to get it out and a new one in with minimal part removal.

I'll see what I can dig up in VIDA when I get home from work.

Now I'm wondering if perhaps it's just time to overhaul the whole PCV system and get the kit from ipd. It's got almost 120,000 miles on it.

I also noticed the hose on mine doesn't look quite like the hose pictured at ipd -- it's not a smooth hose like the Volvo OEM hose, it's got ridges in some spots. I wonder if it's a non-OEM hose.

Thanks DYZ, looks like I'm also a victim of Volvo's breather hose experiment!

It sounds like as long as the other parts of the PCV system aren't broken the thing to do is just replace that hose and clean out the others.

    I cannot tell a lie
IIRC, your breather pressure was fine (negative pressure) when it left here so I'm pretty sure we did not do a breather, that would be original.
I suppose now would be a good time to do the breather box system

If I did (your will have to remind me if I said we did) I should have some recourse.. at least on parts
