    Default Recommended oil type

Just purchased 04 XC70 Crosscountry for daughter, 111,000 miles. First Volvo. What type of oil is recommended for this vehicle. Owner manual is not with vehicle. I seen on oil filler cap Castrol oil is recommended but it does not say weight. Does it need to be a synthetic type? Thank you.

This might help with this inquiry as well as any others you might have with your new XC.

Here is a link to the 2004 owners manual:

    http://apps.volvocars.us/ownersdocs/.../04xc70_00.htm

Engine oil must meet the minimum ILSAC specification GF-2, including ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF and SJ/Energy Conserving.

Your Volvo has been certified to standards using ILSAC oil specification GF-2 5W-30. Volvo recommends use of oil with a quality rating equal to or higher than ILSAC GF-2. Equivalent and better oils include ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF, and SJ/Energy conserving. Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel economy, engine performance, or engine protection.
Any quality 5W-30 oil will be fine. Synthetic is recommended if you want to stick to the 7500 mile change interval. If you decide to use non-synthetic (regular) you should be doing the changes between 3000 and 5000 miles.

+1 - Ars said exactly what I would have.

I run a 5W30 (or sometimes a 5W40 in the summer) synthetic and stick to the factory interval. The increased cost is offset by fewer oil changes...but the cost of oil is cheap compared to the cost of repairs...

I use Mobil 1 as the 7500 mile oil change interval is better served with a syn in my belief.-Dick

I have Mobil ONE in my V-70, Pennzoil Ultra in my wife's XC, Pennzoil Platinum in the Corolla and Castrol Syntec in the 4Runner but the point is: there are many excellent synthetic oils out there. My approach is to find a good sale on a quality oil (I am clearly not brand loyal on oil), and right now, you can find some great deals on oil as the stores are clearing out the SM-rated oil in favor of the new SN standard.

Since the XC calls for an SL-rated oil, the SM exceeds the standard...so, go hunt for a deal...

The Volvo recommended oil for Florida climate (high between 86-104F) is 10W30 or 5W40 but I recommend you go with Mobil1 0W40. A 7500mi oil change interval should be fine with that oil. Castrol Syntec 0W30 is an alternative but it's generally more expensive and harder to find.

Mobil 1 0W40 is precisely what is in my 2002 V-70T5.

Spend a little time on www.bobistheoilguy.com - and you'll find LOTS of M1 0W40 fans...it's a very durable oil, designed for extended drain intervals in Euro cars...

I do not, but we can sit here and argue that 'till the crows come home.
I recommend 10w30 or in FL perhaps even a 10w40 (from April thru November).

I would not use a full synthetic at over 100K miles until you are 100% sure your breather box/PCV is 100% clean, stick with a high quality SEMI-Synthetic for now.

You can order a full set of books/owner's manual, etc from Volvo for about $40

So that means I will be okay with 10w40 on my next change due in 500 miles now at 145K miles. The weather here in UAE and Oman is with average temp 90-95 deg F.
