Died on a 6 lane freeway. Able to limp into strange town 30 miles away. Waited weekend for dealer to open up. About 52,000 mi. Dealer wanted $950. When I protested, Volvo paid.

Died at 64k (now at 90K) on my wife on the way to work on a busy hwy. Scared the zippidy out of her and I got an angry cell phone call to boot. I paid $800 of the bill - dealer chopped 10% off of the price of part because I bitched that it had just gone out or warrentee. Now we have a 65 Chevy C-10 vehicle with a Holley carb as a backup..argh!

Mine failed at 66K, and I had to have it towed 40 miles to the "Big" city. The dealer charged me $968.87, and when I choked at the amount, he blamed me for "using cheap gas and failing to properly maintain air filters", which is ridiculous as I ALWAYS use the best fuel available and have ALL my regularly scheduled maintenance done at the Dealer garage.

    Their attitude is unacceptable.

The real crime is that the replacement part is the exact same faulty design ... guaranteed to fail again.

Default Would it be too late to add a question?

Would it be too late to add a question? I think it might be relevant to know whether the cars were turbo or non-turbo. Apparently, one of the hypotheses of failure cause involves pressure that would affect turbos, but not non-turbos. Collecting some data on this would shed light on this hypothesis.

    How about:

    - Failed but restarted normally then had it replaced with 3rd party extended warranty before total failure.

It won't let me change, and then I would have to get the people who voted back, but good idea, anyone with good ideas leave them here, and will we change it and try again in a couple of months

I guess I'm going to vote "Multiple ETM failures" since I experienced almost all of the possible scenarios except "flat out died". I had the (1) hesitation and cutting out, (2) limp home mode on busy 4-lane hwy, (3) dash light warning with no loss of performance - twice, and (4) had it cleaned which cost me 240 bones and lasted only a month. I guess that about covers it.

Default I'm the 1 "no failure" at 80k plus BUT...

There should be a catagory for "ETS Light Came On but Was Fixed by Cleaning".
My ETS light came on at about 71k about a month after I had purchased it used. It showed NO performance issues unlike most others who have experienced serious performance issues along with the light coming on. I took it back to the guy I bought it from (and independent Volvo only mechanic and dealer) and he did a cleaning of the throttle body. (It is the original body - not replaced by pervious owner). I also have all the history and no problem prior to this event. That was about 14 months and 14k miles ago and so far so good. However I have little doubt that it is in my future. In my case however it was an issue of cleaning the body not replacing and I am currently at 86k. So I have to vote that there has been no "failure" at this point and I am over 80k. I just hope I don't change catagories soon!!
