I had mine turned off when I picked up the car. I hate them! Yes, up nort eh' you have to have them. But here in the U.S. we don't. I like to leave the safety advantage of visibility to the motocycles. Besides, the bulbs last a lot longer.

It's a moot point with me.
New cars here have to display running lights in the daytime, but I've been running with headlights on for 40 years, so I'm not likely to stop now.
Never found my headlight consumption to be a problem.
Did have to fit my own relays in every vehicle up to the last one.

Now if we could just get those turkeys with the "pavement coloured" cars to turn on their lights on dull days, rainy days, foggy days, at twilight......
Ah! I guess that's why the DRL.

I've been runing my 940 for six years (62000 miles) with lights on and never had to change a bulb. I see no advantage in having them switched off.

The cost of the bulbs are a small price in the safety. Its just as, if not more important to be seen as it is to see.

    I'm with Cbob,

DRL's have been mandatory here in Canuck country since '89. Studies have proved that DRL's have reduced daytime crashes in the countries that have adopted them. As a driver or passenger, I really don't find them a nuisance at all.

I wonder if the light intensity of DRL's varies from country to country?

Only thing I wish was that we had the option to turn the DRL's off in foggy conditions as they tend to inhibit visibility when the fog lamps are on in certain conditions. That's about the only instance where I wouldn't want them, otherwise

In Denmark (and in Sweeden) it is the law, to have the lights on alle day (and night).
You get a fine similar to not wearing seatbelts, for not driving with your lights on.
It has been that way for close to 6 years i believe. In my opinion, the shorter life you get out of your bulbs, is well compensated for in the fact, that other cars is a lot more easy to spot (eg sunlight, dusk, dawn, pooor lighting conditions etc.)

I voted off.  I like them on in the city, off on the highway in broad daylight.

And I like being able to make the decision for myself.

Mine are on, but I'd like them off.  I too, would like the power to make that decision.  Since they are still on, I put the parking lamps on instead, which turns the headlights off.  Somebody mentioned that they wished they could turn them off in foggy conditions - you can!  Only the markers will stay on, and of course, you can turn your fogs on, if you'd like!
