Default oil leak at turbo on 2004 XC90 2wd

I had my oil changed today and the tech says I have a oil leak around the seal at the turbo. Is this something I might replace myself? I have a good independent mech. The service says it would be around $800 for them to replace the seal. Sounds a little high, but the turbo sits in the back of the engine compartment, so it may take some time to get to it. Looking forward to your thoughts on this. The tech says it is bad enough to ruin my cat-converter. I have notices some oil spots in my garage.

External leak wont hurt the CAT, only an internal leak in the exhaust. Does it smoke out
    of the exhaust?

Probably an o-ring in the turbo pedestal, if it is leaking enough to have oil drips then
    it should be replaced.

I get no smoke from exhaust, and don't seem to be using oil when checking over time. A small leak is ok with me ( I owned a Harley for some time and called this an oil indicator leak. LOL ) but I don't want to damage the turbo longterm. Thanks for the input.
