howard: it's hard to say, but you are right that is a permanent link between to shafts not used for any kind of engagement/disengagement. By the looks of it, i'd guess they made that sleeve the weakest point, it could be intentional that it stripps and fails before other components. Some times in complex machines there are sacrificial parts intended to fail first to protect other more expensive parts.
My question is, if that fails, does that mean the car can no longer drive? Surely if that sleeve fails you no longer have torque going to the right wheel OR the prop shaft. This means that the car would not be able to move because it would be only 1 wheel drive and no torque on it.
Can some one confirm this?
