    Default 2004 vs 2006 XC70

Had a 2001 V70 that was in an accident that totalled it. Very impressed with the way the car performed in the accident, so I am looking to replace it with a XC70. My teenage daughters will be the primary drivers, so the safety features are the most important aspects to me. I have narrowed my search to a 2004 XC70 with 72K miles (asking $11,900) or a 2006 XC70 Ocean Race Edition with 104K miles (asking $13,995). Both vehicles have been serviced by Volvo dealerships and all safety recalls taken care of etc. The higher miles on the 2006 are due to highway usage. I can't decide between the two, so any word of wisdom/experience from the forum would be most appreciated. Thanks!! Susan

From a safety aspect, the 06 is the "facelifted" choice, featuring the newer (3rd gen) AWD (as opposite to the 2nd gen 03-05 and torsen (crap?) 01-02) and is a generally newer car. All manufactures makes small changes here and there from year to year, not always saying so much about it. General rule of thumb is newer = better when looking at it from a safety aspect.
    Current Cars:
1994 BMW 850 CiA (151k km) Diamond Schwartz. A chipped 5.0 liter V12 4-speed auto with every option imaginable.
    1968 Cadillac DeVille Convertible Survivor (44k miles). A 7,7l, 472 cid, 3 ton monster doing 6 MPG.

    Previous Cars:
2004 XC70 2.5T (Died at 173k km) Saphire Black with black interior. RTI, manual seats and an automatic 5-speed.

    Default Condition is everything

Buy the one that has the most complete maintenance history. Highway miles are not a big deal...neglected service will result in more repairs in the future and you already know how expensive Volvo repairs can be...

Age is not as important as condition/service...look at the physical appearance of the car as well...for example, leather, if taken care of, ages well...neglected leather ages poorly.

Secondarily, I like the looks of the Ocean Race edition...

As was said, condition, condition, condition (and records).
Both are priced just about right, the only REAL difference is the "instant traction" on the 06 vs the 04, the rest is just cosmetics.

You can also look at my 2005 with a 3rd seat and booster seats
    http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17608
which is right between these two in model year, mileage and price.

As long as they're mechanically and cosmetically sound, any one of these three would be a good choice.
(Mine of course, is both mechanically and cosmetically near perfect)!

Default On the Ocean Race one

If the T-Belt was not done, and verifiyable add that into the price on the '06.
It should have just been done. If anything it can be a good bargaining area.
