A poll for the '01 and '02 owners, about if and when your transmission died. As a guy who does a lot of statistics, I am trying to figure out if it is worth keeping or selling my car.

I hope this poll is a lesson to everyone who feeds into the online hysteria regarding these transmissions. Although still a relatively small sample size (17), less than 6% of transmissions have died. And that for a 9 year old car...
I agree completely. From reading this forum, it seemed that it was a sure bet that most transmissions on the earlier models died by 150,000 miles at the greatest. This tells me that I should definitely keep my Volvo till it dies, as I did with my 240 at over 400,000 miles, and not worry about the transmission, and just do some frequent flushes every 50,000 miles or so.

Josh,
I generally agree with your conclusions but would add two caveats:
(1) In addition to periodic flushes it is very necessary to pay attention to keeping resonably uniform tire sizes.
(2) The results of the poll may be somewhat skewed by the fact that most volvoxc.com members are active users of their cars, i.e., perhaps there is a component of '01-'02 owners who relatively early experienced transmission problems, sold their cars and are not represented in our polling population.
Yr: 2002
Mi: died at approx 55,000 mi.

My transmission had been surging and having all sorts of problems. It had been into the dealer no less than 5 times for transmission concerns. I purchased this vehicle with about 30,000mi on it. I am the second owner and never knew this vehicle to have a nice clean shift.
//HOW MY TRANSMISSION FINALLY DIED
I had just got my XC back from the dealer for transmission issues a few days before. "Sorry sir, we did not see any issues." I was going down a hill on the highway at 50mph, in rush hour, in a tunnel, when the transmission decided to do that gear down thing. It threw me over the steering wheel hanging from my seatbelt. I could hear the screaching of wheels behind me as others avoided an accident. Luckily, no one got hurt. I took my car back to the dealership and threw my keys at the service advisor. I told him he almost killed me and to call me when Volvo either fixes the problem or presents me with a brand new car! Five days later my car was returned to me with a new transmission.
One could also argue that forums draw those who have issues and who are looking for solutions. Those who have relatively benign experiences with their cars and who are not car freaks would have no use for a forum. Bottom line is that this poll is like any other where the respondents are not picked at random. That is, it will have skewed results but still have the ability to draw a conclusion that probably illustrates a wide trend. Just don't expect it to justify a statement that "x percentage of owners did or did not have tranny issues".
Bill
Just bought mine, 115,000 miles with one owner and Full Volvo Service History.
Fine so far
2 days after I bought it at 160,000 miles :(
LOL but I did buy it with a tranny issue so it was expected :D
Spoke with an independent (certified volvo master) mechanic a few days ago...we chatted about how important it is to flush fluid every 20,000 miles or so. He also mentioned that volvo has upgraded a critical part (something to do with a valve seating properly). Did not get the name of the part.
Is it true that the trans should be flushed so often, and is such an upgraded part a reality? I think if anyone is to err on the safe side, maintenance-wise, the transmission is the place to do it. Well, maybe the timing belt too.
Other than that... I have logged 2500 miles on my first(and not my last) xc70awd, and have been more than satisfied with the ride characteristics and economy.
